Indianapolis Colts S Bob Sanders to return sooner rather than later, Head Coach Jim Caldwell says

The Indianapolis Colts are confident S Bob Sanders will be ready to play sometime in the next six weeks.

Beyond that, Colts Head Coach Jim Caldwell said he can't yet say.

Sanders, the 2007 Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year, spent preseason and training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list, and was moved to the active roster Saturday.

"When he's ready to play, we'll put him out there," Caldwell said Monday, saying he didn't know yet if Sanders could play in the regular-season opener Sunday against Jacksonville.

A player on the PUP list at the start of the regular season can not play the first six weeks of the regular season. Because he is on the active roster, Sanders -- who was on PUP with a knee issue -- can play when healthy.

"Probably the biggest thing on that is we feel obviously he's going to be inside that 5-to-6 week window," Caldwell said. "He's making good progress. He's coming along. Whenever he's ready, we'll put him out there. He's doing well."

Caldwell said Sanders will be ready sooner rather than later.

"How soon that is, I'm not certain," Caldwell said.

Caldwell was then asked if that meant Sanders was ruled out Sunday.

"How soon that is, I'm not certain," he said again.
