Indianapolis Colts DE Dwight Freeney expected to be fine for Super Bowl, President Bill Polian says

Indianapolis Colts DE Dwight Freeney sustained a sprained ankle in the AFC Championship Game, but likely will play in the Super Bowl.

Freeney, a five-time Pro Bowl selection, could miss practice time this week, but will undergo treatment, and Colts President Bill Polian said on his weekly radio show Monday, “I don't think it will have any real effect on the Super Bowl, especially if we get that treatment going as quickly as possible.”

Polian, speaking on his weekly radio show in Hank FM 97.1 in Indianapolis on Monday, also said the status of rookie CB Jerraud Powers remains uncertain after missing Sunday's AFC Championship Game with a foot injury.

“He's progressing,” Polian said. “It's the rate of progress, is what we're going to monitor.”

Polian also said S Antoine Bethea re-injured his back against the New York Jets Sunday but should play in the Super Bowl, and WR Reggie Wayne had swelling on his knee, but also is expected to be available when the Colts play New Orleans in Super Bowl XLI on February 7.

“We may give him a practice or two off this week,” Polian said of Wayne, a four-time Pro Bowl selection. “Reggie's a gamer and you know he'll be ready.”

Polian said rookie RB Donald Brown “has a bit of a toe problem, which probably won't be a factor in the Super Bowl, but might require a practice off this coming week.”

“We'll see,” Polian said of Brown.

Polian on Monday also addressed:

* Why the Colts will wear blue jerseys in the Super Bowl: “That's the way most of the players feel. They wanted to wear blue. That's the home team. That's what we're going to do. I tend to be a bit of a history buff, but I'm not sure it isn't the guys in the uniforms that make more of a difference than the uniforms themselves. They wanted to wear blue, so we said, 'Fine.' Let's hope the result, in spite of the uniform color, is the same we had last time (in a Miami Super Bowl).”

* A failed quarterback sneak in the first half: “We were trying to get up there and go quickly. We didn't get it off quickly enough. They beat us to the punch and knocked our linemen into the backfield. In retrospect, it's probably a play you'd rather have back: go to another play. We did have another play in the package we could have gone to that in hindsight would have been better. (Hall of Fame Head Coach) Marv Levy always used to say, 'If what you did did not work, you should have done the other thing.' That's a clear case of that.' Fortunately, (K) Matty (Stover) was able to bail us out.

* On why former RB Edgerrin James was honored as an honorary co-captain on Sunday while former WR Marvin Harrison wasn't: “You're only allowed to pick one. We had a sergeant for the other co-captain and they made an exception for military figure prominent such as he, but we could only pick one and we thought that the day will soon come when Marvin will go on the Ring of Honor and so we'd give Edgerrin – who's probably playing his last year in the National Football League this year – that honor.”

Marvin has some on-going legal problems. Although, all in all, when considered - I do think James was a better choice just because fans like myself could see/hear that he was appreciative of the tribute given to him at the Philly game and that just carries over nicely to the AFC Championship game.
