Indiana went on a 11-2 second half run and clamped down defensively to remain unbeaten and post a 75-59 victory over intra-state rival Butler on Sunday at the Assembly Hall in Bloomington. Sophomore Will Sheehey continued his strong play with 21 points and Cody Zeller added 16. The win gave the Hoosiers a 6-0 record and the title in the contrived Hoosier Invitational. Butler falls to 3-3.
The Hoosiers broke open a close game at the half way mark of the second half with a quick flurry that included a Sheehey three-pointer, a Zeller layup, and a steal and driving bucket by point guard Jordan Hulls. After Christian Watford hit 1-of-2 free throws, Zeller cleaned up the trash with a putback to put IU firmly in control.
The Hoosiers rebounded from sluggish 32 % shooting in the first half to warm up to 50% in the second half..
Chrishawn Hopkins scored 19 points and Khyle Marshall had 16 to pace the Bulldogs.
IU ventures into ACC territory for Wednesday’s matchup with North Carolina State in the annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The Wolfpack are off to a 5-1 start.
Free Throws: Sheehey was named the IU Invitational’s Most Valuable Player….The contest pitted the last two Indiana schools to play in the Final Four. IU lost the 2002 title game to Maryland and Butler fell to Duke and Connecticut in the last two championship games….The Hoosiers are 6-0 for the second straight season.
