According to an article in the East Valley Tribune, “Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said Saturday he ordered his deputies to tape conversations with federal officials after a dispute over who called for the release of illegal immigrants arrested in a crime sweep.”
On Saturday Sheriff Arpaio addressed the release of the thirteen illegal immigrants in a press conference. Arpaio said that his department was ordered to release these individuals because they did not meet the new DHS policies. DHS spokesperson, Matthew Chandler, initially denied this, saying ““The determination to release these individuals lies solely within the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.” The recorded conversations between deputies and ICE prove Arpaio’s claims.
If the Department of Homeland Security cannot decipher their new policies, how is local law enforcement expected to? That is why 287(g) worked so well, it allowed those in the trenches, so to speak, to make the tough decisions required in combating illegal immigration.
The new policies instituted by DHS hinder rather than help an already faltering immigration system. If both federal and local law enforcement is unclear of where they stand, we can assume that our immigration system will erupt into even more chaos, thereby accomplishing nothing.
