According to the Department of Homeland Security, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio will no longer have the authority to arrest suspected illegal immigrants based solely on their immigration status. The agreement (287g), which authorized sheriff’s deputies to enforce federal immigration laws, has been revoked. However deputies may still screen the immigration status of suspects booked into county jails.
It is Arpaio’s controversial “crime suppression sweeps” and pressure from civil-rights, labor, religious and pro-immigrant groups that invited the Federal Governments attention. Claims of abuse of power and racial profiling have led DHS to re-think the agreement the Maricopa County Sheriffs office had with ICE.
In a press conference Tuesday Arpaio stated, regarding the decision, “it’s all politics.” He said he had no plans to stop his “crime suppression sweeps.”
In Arizona public opinion of the sheriff is severely divided. They either support him or hotly protest him, there are very few who are on the fence. Although he is a controversial figure he has successfully managed to win re-election five times. While many may claim to be uncomfortable with his methods it appears the majority applaud his results.
It will be interesting to see how the decision by DHS plays out. Considering the reputation the Maricopa County sheriff has earned, one can wager, he will not accept it willingly or quietly.

I have to state this once again. The reason, in my opinion, that Dems are trying so desperately to neuter Joe and other law enforcement officials' policies on illegal immigration is this: When amnesty bills are introduced, it will attrack legions of lefty supporters. If passed, it will instantly enable approximately 6 million new voters. If those voters now have sudden access to free health care, unemployment benfits, food stamps, and Janet's "hotel" plan, etc., for whom will they vote? Dems of course. This is a carefully crafted plot to ensure continued control of congress and emasculating Joe is just a first step. Obama and Janet are laying the country bare to strip taxpayers who will support the newly-legals. Beware, be heard, be active. Joe, I will vote for you again! You seem to be one of the very few elected officials with concern for the law, the rights of REAL citizens and you are blessed with common sense!

I have seen Arpaio's sweeps with my own eyes, down around 16th Ave and McDowell......I swear on my children that these sweeps are targeting ANYONE WHO LOOKS LATINO. Until you have seen them do this, you shouldn't comment. It's sick and illegal. Profiling at it's best. When I drove down McDowell that day I never thought I'd see 10+ sheriffs cars and SUVs just taking ANYONE THAT LOOKS LATINO out of their business, vehicles and yes, right off the sidewalk.

The 10 street level 'crime suppression sweeps' of illegal immigrants by the Maricopa County Sheriff Office (MCSO) have netted a paltry 264 arrests despite the great expenditure of resources - up to 300 deputies and posse members, SWAT teams, and even helicopters.

The issue is that MANY American citizens (including native Americans), as well as lawful permanent residents (aka 'green card' holders) have been unlawfully detained in these sweeps. MCSO saturates an area of the metro area and begins stopping cars using broken tail lights/windshields as "probable cause" - then interrogating the occupants of the vehicles. MCSO stops persons of "Hispanic" appearance almost exclusively which amounts to ILLEGAL racial profiling.
After all, its the ILLEGAL part that has you upset right?
MCSO has also been caught red handed stopping vehicles and then making up a reason ("probable cause") AFTER the fact.

The overwhelming majority of the 30,000+ illegal immigrants who have been identified by ICE for removal were actually arrested by non MCSO law enforcement agencies. Once in the jail system, MCSO deputies placed immigration holds on them for removal proceedings...but this aspect of MCSOs function will NOT be affected by the Dept of Homeland Security reigning in MCSO street level sweeps.
Arpaio doesn't get the violate the law in the course of ostensibly enforcing the law...period!

legal right to inforce immigration laws. They don't need the Feds to tell them who they can and cannot allow in the states. Its up to the state government to inforce it.
Shame on Napolitano for disregrading the will of Maricopa County citizens and voters (who overwhelmingly approve of the great Sheriff Joe) and trying to stop Joe Arpaio from arresting illegals. Sheriff Arpaio is using the laws as they were written. I applaud him. I think we should have a "million patriot" march down their to show our support of True American Patriots, like Joe. DHS and our other government mamby pambys, need to enforce these immigration laws. It's now a matter of "soverienty" not national security. Our country will be "Illegal Latino" majority in 5 years or less if we don't speak up and speak out now.
