A new report on BigGovernment.com says the community activist group ACORN may be operating illegally in the state of Maryland. According to the exclusive report ACORN, Inc., which is the parent organization of all ACORN operations, lost its corporate charter in Maryland in 2006. The report also says ACORN Housing lost its charter in 2008.
The news that ACORN may be operating illegally in Maryland is the latest in a series of scandals and accusations of criminal activity.
Last week 11 ACORN employees in Florida were arrested on charges of voter fraud. The group is also being investigated on allegations of voter fraud in at least a dozen other states.
BigGovernment.com has released three videos over the last several days showing ACORN employees giving advice on how to avoid paying taxes and obtain a low income housing loan for the purpose of operating an underage prostitution ring to 25 year old filmmaker James O'Keefe, and 20 year old aspiring journalist Hannah Giles, who were posing as a pimp and prostitute.
The first video was filmed at ACORN's Baltimore office. Two subsequent videos were released showing ACORN employees in Washington, D.C. and Brooklyn giving similar advice.
The videos led to the firing of four employees, two each in Baltimore and Washington. The Brooklyn District Attorney's Office announced on Monday that it would be investigating ACORN operations there. Another video is said to be set for release today.
The Senate also voted 83-7 on Monday to end HUD funding of the community activist group. That measure still has to pass in the House before the funding is halted.
Several prominent lawmakers are calling for a government investigation into ACORN's alleged criminal activites. Rep. John Boehner, R-OH, and other House Republicans sent a letter to President Obama today asking the President to order the Internal Revenue Service to sever all ties with ACORN in light of recent allegations of corruption by the group. The letter says in part, "Despite these abuses the IRS helpline continues to refer individuals to ACORN offices for tax preparation consultation and continues to offer an implicit endorsement of their work."
The BigGovernment.com report and documents showing the revocation of ACORN's corporate charter can be found by clicking any of the links in this article.
A statement posted on the ACORN website says the following:
"The relentless attacks on ACORN's members, its staff and the policies and positions we promote are unprecedented. An international entertainment conglomerate, disguising itself as a "news" agency (Fox), has expended millions, if not tens of millions of dollars, in their attempt to destroy the largest community organization of Black, Latino, poor and working families in the country. It is not coincidence that the most recent attacks have been launched just when health care reform is gaining traction. It is clear they've had these tapes for months. We are their Willy Horton for 2009."
This is the first portion of the statement. The full statement can be read at ACORN.org.

Congrats to Mr. O'Keefe and Hannah Giles for their bravery. They make me proud to be an American. God Bless their them and protect them for their efforts.
I only wish the people we elected will do something to make sure that our hard earned dollars don't go to these types of orgnizations! Good to know that there are honest people and especially of their generation who are mostly liberal.
Keep up th good work and I hope that you both have very successful futures!!
Regards to the "esteemed" ACORN, I totally agree with Christine----for 2 young people to come forward; brave enough to place themselves at risk---makes my 69 yr.old heart sing! In response to the letter before Christine's-----I've been dirt poor-- grew up with no father figure, living in the projects in the late 40's, 6 siblings--My mother refusing welfare---because she didn't want my 2 older brothers to have to quit their jobs---yes, I actually said JOBS, as paper boys, milk delivery boys, and me with my baby sitting job. She would not allow that to happen---we had to continue our jobs, because only SHE was responsibile for the choices she made in her own life & for our family. All six of us grew up proud and strong Americans. Nothing was handed to us~~In the language some of you don't understand----we "worked our asses off"!!I want to literally throw up when the "woe is me--I'm poor--take care of me" card is played----you reap what you sow!! We are individuals. NO big government!
I am so glad there are people out there able and willing to expose the awful things happening within the ACORN operation. ACORN should not receive another dime from our government. Thank you to O'Keefe and Giles for a really wonderful job well done.
She is a hottie and a brave lady,It's like wow brains and looks.
Go get them.
Thanks to these two wonderful Americans who exposed Acorn to be the rotten apple we thought it to be. I only wish the best for them and their endeavor. Now lets get after the seven (7) Democrats who voted against stopping Acorn's funding, throw the BUMS out and lets get someone in who will do the right thing and work for America.
Let us blog but remember "Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of thier country"
"We are their Willy Horton for 2009."
Wasn't Willie Horton really guilty, and didn't he actually commit more crimes -IN MARYLAND, ironically- while furloughed under a Dukakis-supported program?
By saying this, aren't they confessing to being criminals?
You got it exactly right Casual Observer. They are basically saying, "Yes, we are guilty, and if you let us go we'll do it again!"
Charlie Gibson, who so smugly pulled a "gotcha" on Sarah Palin with the Bush Doctrine, apparently cherry-picks the information he is interested in.
Didn't hear about the Acorn scandal, and he's the ABC Evening News anchor? That's a good one. Let me tell you about the tooth fairy.
It's all theater people they are race baiting and soon this country will split apart..
Congrats to Mr. O'Keefe and Hannah Giles for their bravery. We will be happy to pay for your Legal help. Let us know. Take care.
HIP HIP HOORAY ABOUT THE MOST AMERICAN THING I HAVE IN LONG TIME.THANKS TO THESE TWO WONDERFUL YOUNG PEOPLE MAY YOU HAVE LONG REAL BLESSED LIVES. Well, if ACORN could be operating illegaly anywhere, Maryland would sure be the place. The liberals there are so clueless it's almost sad.
