The best thing about Elliott Bay Books is that the inside looks like a boat. It's all wooden and there are lofts and stairs and tall ceilings. The whole place gives you the warm feeling of being on a very large floating boat full of books.
Located in the oldest neighborhood in Seattle, Pioneer Square, Elliott Bay Books is likely the largest used bookstore in the entire city. One of the best things they do is put out a publication called "Booknotes". In this publication the staff of Elliott Bay give short reviews of some of their favorite books, fiction and nonfiction (sadly, to this author, no poetry).
Elliott Bay also has a great cafe that is located under the bookstore. Now, Pioneer Square is known for it's history and part of that history is the vast underground that exists beneith its buildings. The cafe at Elliott Bay is in the part of the building which once was the ground floor before the level of the streets was raised. If you want to know why they raised the level of the streets you can visit Seattle's famous Underground Tour, which is just a block away.
