Dan McIntosh, a 13 veteran of the Bensalem Rescue Squad died last night on a call, after confronting a caller who was suicidal. The coroner has listed the death as a massive heart attack. Speculation was rampant within the last 24 hours as to what transpired between the subject, and McIntosh. According to Bensalem Public Safety Director Fred Harran, there still are questions about the incident, but this much is known.
"There does not appear to be any physical altercation at all", Harran said at an afternoon press conference outside the squad headquarters. "When Dan McIntosh received a call about a suicidal subject, he spotted the man along the 2600 block of Knights Rd. He asked him if he needed help and the man ran away. McIntosh, trying to help the man ran after him. During the run, he had a massive heart attck and fell over, hitting his head", Harran told the media.
"Other medics throughout the region have come forward to help us. We've gotten call from as far away as Pittsburgh. For the first time in our history, Bensalem EMS is not running calls. They are all being run by other squads. we are taking two days off to grieve " said EMS director Tom Topley.
The suspect is committed to the psych ward at Lower Bucks Hospital for a mental health evaluation. "He is aware of the incident, and cooperated with police", Harran said. due to the turn of events and the fact that the man did not assault the medic, it is unlikely he will face criminal charges.
Both Harran and Topley praised McIntosh . They noted that he was a part time office for Hulmeville Boro and just passed a physical. "A heart attack can happen at any time", Harran said.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
