He’s here. Born on May 14th 5:16 a.m. EST, our new grandson, Matt, arrived on the scene in Washington DC. My daughter-in-law, Amanda, and Matt are both doing well and my son, Erik, sounds like the proud new dad that I knew was in him.
Over the last 24 hours, I have done a lot of reminiscing. I have looked at Erik’s baby album a few dozen times and compared the pictures of him at birth with the pictures I have received of Matt. Everyone on the East Coast says the baby looks like my son, and I agree. I have re-read the milestones, starting with sleeping through the night. Erik was good at that one and at five weeks, he was too tired to look for late night entertainment. I hope that Matt takes after his dad, so that both parents get a good night’s sleep.
When my daughter-in-law went into labor at 2:00 a.m., three hours before Matt’s birth, she called her mother, Susan, in Manhattan to let her know the time was near. Having had the pleasure of getting to know her mom during wedding planning, I knew she was going to be on top of this event, too. The first flight out of New York to DC was at 6:00 a.m., and she was on it. Two hours later, she was sending us pictures of Matt from the hospital. I know that the new parents and baby Matt are in good hands with Susan on the scene.
Next month, we will head east and meet the new member of the family. My dad will fly in from Florida to see his first great-grandchild. He is thrilled. My sister has now become a great-aunt, a first for her as well, and she will hop on the bandwagon from Los Angeles.
A new baby gives a family the opportunity to join together as one happy unit. That’s my goal for our family.
Meanwhile, I’ll be working on my new name, thanks to the suggestions from my readers. I received a lot of choices, and I’ll take them along to DC and see which one fits.
Talk to you soon.
