I’m back from Washington DC and from my first visit with my wonderful new grandson, Matt… and, of course, his parents. I was already missing all of them as I walked to the rental car to head to the airport after our last dinner out. Burgers for everyone with teeth, and a nap for the little guy with gums.
So, what was it like seeing my son and daughter-in-law as first time parents, you might ask? It was great!
If we roll back the clock a few columns, I had asked you to help me with a name for me, not the baby. And, you didn’t let me down. My deal with my son and daughter-in-law was that I would send along all of your suggestions, over 100 of them, and they would narrow it down to their favorite five. I received the five choices before I left for my visit and got to mull them over and select my new name. The unveiling was to have taken place with everyone when I arrived at their home.
Ah, the best laid plans. Three days before I left, I decided to buy Matt a gift and sent it on ahead directly from the store, and it was scheduled to be delivered in the middle of my trip. It included the first gift card that I signed using my new name along with “Poppy,” Matt’s new grandfather.
When does anything ever arrive earlier than expected? The one time that I didn’t want it to. The gift arrived the day before we did, so everyone knew my new name. And now you will too…BB.
Yes, very simple, goes with Poppy and is also the name of my sister’s horse. Although my sister isn’t the one who submitted it, in the horse’s case, it stands for “basic black” which is something I didn’t know until I shared the name. It works well for my wardrobe, but I picked it because it was cute and easy to say. If Matt doesn’t like it, he can pick his own name for me at a later date.
For all the fathers out there, Happy Father’s Day. For my son Erik, Happy First Father’s Day. There aren't enough words to tell you how very proud I am to be your mother, Amanda's mother-in-law and Matt’s BB.
