Yesterday, I attended a monthly women’s networking luncheon and the keynote speaker asked me what my upcoming book was about. I told her that it was all about great mother-in-law/daughter-in-law relationships, and she told me that the key to the successful management of her relationship with her mother-in-law was to move out of state.
I’d like to believe that she was just being humorous, but I would probably be wrong.
When I was researching my book, I specifically looked for successful mother-in-law/daughter-in-law duos who lived in the same neighborhood. And I found lots of them. I learned how they managed to make it work well, and some of the tips they offered include:
- If you want to see your son and daughter-in-law, call and ask when they are available.
- Recognize their busy time, and make phone calls when they can speak to you with fewer distractions.
- Be flexible and understand that your son and daughter-in-law have their own lives.
These tips work in both directions…tell your son and daughter-in-law that you, too, have a busy life and recognizing that, you will all be able to communicate more effectively.
Talk to you soon.
