The Department of Homeland Security has just reported that during 2009, they issued 1,130,818 new Green Cards to foreign nationals, allowing them to work legally in this country. That number represents the fourth highest number of cards issued in one year.
750,000 of the new Green Cards were given to the families of U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents.
The top four recipient nations are as follows:
-Mexico…164,920
-China…receiving 64,238
-Philippines…60,029
-India…57,304
In Feb. 2009, the financial institution Merrill Lynch announced that the nation’s actual unemployment rate had reached 13.9 percent. A year later, that number had risen to 17.3 percent. This figure represents Americans who have been laid off from full-time positions and are now working part-time, as well as those who have simply stopped looking for work, and workers whose unemployment benefits have run out.
The official unemployment figure given monthly by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics is now listed around 10 percent, but represents only those Americans currently receiving unemployment checks, and is not truly indicative of the dire employment situation now facing the U.S.
In 1931, the second full year of the Great Depression, the average rate of unemployment was 16.3 percent, with U.S. unemployment peaking at 25 percent in 1933. We now sit in between those two disastrous figures, with an ever-worsening economy.
With U.S. unemployment now at depression levels, we simply can no longer tolerate not only illegal immigration, but any immigration which allows foreign nationals to take much-needed jobs from American citizens.
Why are we paying the salaries of elected representatives who now seem to represent everyone, but us?

We have to move past the stale argument of "illegal bad / legal immigration good" argument.
We need a time out amd moratorium on ALL immigration (legal and illegal) to allow those here the chance to assimilate and to loosen the job market for our suffering citizens.
Pitting American workers against immigrants for jobs is morally reprehensible. Controlling immigration is not only the moral thing to do; it is mandated by our Constitution. This nation desperately needs a 10 year moratorium on all immigration and then move toward sustainable immigration of 100,000 a year.
Our country needs time to heal, time to create jobs for millions of unemployed Americans, time to take care of our own hungry, homeless and needy. Then, the immigrants that we do allow in must be educated and skilled and able to contribute to society, be self-supporting and not become a financial burden on American taxpayers.
It's time for the American people to tell the president and congress that Enough is Enough! It's time to demand a moratorium on all immigration, and the time is NOW! Let your congress-critters know that their political careers will come to an end if they don't listen to We the People.

These foreigners who got green cards are legal immigrants that came to the USA for one reason or another and now are legally staying here for work or have migrated here permanently. I think there will always be a pro & cons in this issue. It maybe true that illegal(s) should be sent back because they broke the law. I am fore for that BUT imagine the Gov't sending back all 12M illegals from US. How much would that cost and where are they going to get the money. Don't tell me from our tax money again. I am fore with giving them a temporary working permit, pay fines and penalties, go fall in the line to get your GC's. The way I see it, with or without CIR, we have to accept the fact that they are already working. Not only are the employers not giving the correct wages, the Gov't gets no tax. With them having temporary working documents, Gov't gets tax. When they pay penalties, it will be a revenue again. Once all said and done, definitely, some of them will create companies thus creating jobs. It will fuel the economy in terms of buying power. It is irrelevant if our country was built on immigration. Welcoming millions of immigrants when the country was under-populated was a smart idea. Allowing millions in now depletes resources, causes over-crowding, and increases unemployment. A tradition of mass immigration, once useful, is now impractical and unrealistic, and unfair to Americans who don't view themselves as a population to be replaced.
There is only one solution to the problem of the open floodgates of illegal immigration: close the border. We have millions of troops stationed all over the world protecting the interests of other nations. Sixty years after the Korean War, we still maintain a massive military presence there. You guys that have never had to deal with illegals on a daily basis cannot possibly understand. You have never seen a pickup truck sporting Mexican license plates with the words "Texas is Northern Mexico" written in Spanish and plastered across their rear window. You don't drive by the SSA office and see Escalades and Hummers with foreign plates parked in the lot every day. You don't feel the frustration when you go for a job on an oil rig and get told you can't be hired because no one on the crew speaks English or even wants to.

A couple of points: the official unemployment number is reached by asking people whether they are currently looking for work and is not tied to the number of people receiving benefits. And to the comment about legal permanent status--that's not the same thing as a green card. A green card means you can legally work in the United States as a non-resident. In the article the 750,000 number means the recipient of a the green card had relatives as legal residents.
