Drunk illegal alien, awaiting deportation kills nun in Va.

Prince William County Police Department

On Sunday, Prince William County police arrested Carlos A. Martinelly Montano, 23, after he slammed head on into a car in which three Benedictine nuns were traveling. Sister Denise Mosier was killed instantly, her two companions were taken by helicopter to the hospital where they both remain in critical condition.

Montano was charged with DUI and involuntary manslaughter.

This is actually Montano’s third DUI arrest in Prince William County over the last five years. At the time of the crash, the illegal alien was free on bond while awaiting deportation proceedings.

Montano is currently being held without bond at the Prince William-Manassas regional jail.

A list of a of few Montano’s offenses follows:

- April 2009…he was arrested for driving without a license and convicted in June.

-October 2008…he was stopped for driving 55 in a 35 mph zone, and was found to have a .17 blood alcohol level. Montano was sentenced to three years probation and his driver’s license was suspended.

-December 2007…he was arrested for being drunk in public.

-July 2007…he was charged with DUI and convicted later that same year.

Though Immigration and Customs enforcement ordered Montano to be deported in March 2009, he continued to have run-ins with the law, and remained free.

According to spokesman Jonathan Perok, Prince William County Police notified ICE after both his first and second DUI arrests. The department is now investigating how the illegal alien was able to obtain a valid driver’s license.

Corey Stewart, chairman of the Prince William Board of Supervisors, issued the following statement on the case: “The despicable thing is that this criminal was … handed over to ICE twice, and released by ICE twice. He’s gone out an killed a nun. That’s a perfect example of what’s wrong with immigration enforcement in this country. The blame is on representatives in Congress for being so flaccid on the issue, and they continue not to fund the deportation of illegal immigrants in this country.”

This case is a tragic example of how the federal government has abandoned their duty to all of us. How many more innocent Americans have to die before either the feds do their job and enforce immigration laws, or the states ignore Obama’s meddling and do it for themselves?

Barack Obama and Janet Napolitano are just as responsible, through their inaction, for the death of Sister Denise Mosier as is the illegal alien who smashed into her.

The problem is the bond part. There should be NO BOND. As for Arizona, right on, keep deporting every alien you find. The ACLU can back up the American citizens that have lost life and limb to aliens this time.

When will people accept the fact that laws only apply to law abiding citizens? "The department is now investigating how the illegal alien was able to obtain a valid driver’s license." Well "illegal alien" should be the first clue to how he got anything done. He should have been deported after his first encounter with police! But yet our "representatives" in congress continually refuse to enforce the laws that are already a part of this country. We DO NOT need immigration reform we just need to enforce the laws we already have!

Who was responsible for that?? An ILLEGAL. Pull your head out of your ass. We are becoming victims in our own country. Something needs to be done to keep tabs on who is coming into OUR country. Drew's comments are typical of the left. He raises issues that are completely irrelevant to the story at hand.

So the story is "reactionary"? Tell that to the families whose lives this illegal alien has destroyed.

The fact is that Obama is willfully ignoring the right of every American citizen to a free and sovereign nation. Why? So that he can, with a wave of his hand, issue by proclamation amnesty for millions of people here illegally who are then beholden to him for their new-found "citizenship." Then voila! Instant, new voter base.

I hope that each of these stories as well as the ones on all other crimes they commit, land on the desk in the oval office, although they really won't make a difference. Who cares about the death of innocents when you can get votes and cheap labor? And for the pious, bleeding hearts who say, "We have our own criminals." Sure we do, and we see that they are punished. This is a hasty generalization of undocumented immigrants. While this is tragic, his status as an "illegal alien" is immaterial. A citizen of the US is just as prone to getting drunk as Montano. It is the nature of the media to report tragic stories. People who live a routine life don't get noticed by the media. So, it is very easy to generalize from a few, tragic news stories; yet, I don't think such generalization does anything to advance the immigration debate. Rather than building a wall, I believe the US has an obligation to review the causes of undocumented immigration from Mexico and the role the US plays in this. US corporations monopolize a hugely disproportionate amount of capital, much of which is obtained off the back of underpaid sweatshop workers in Mexico. The US is trying to have their cake and eat it too. This can't be sustained for much longer.

  • Jack 1 year ago

"His status as an 'illegal alien' is immaterial"... His status as an illegal alien is COMPLETELY material. Had he been deported immediately AFTER his DUI in July of 2007, public intoxication in December of 2007, his DUI in October of 2008, OR his driving without a license in April of 2009 (therefore physically removing him from anywhere NEAR the state of Virginia), he would NOT have been able to kill that poor woman.

And if you think Americans are "just as prone to get drunk" as illegal Mexicans, then you don't live anywhere near them, like I do. Had this creep been deported immediately, that woman would still be alive.

We pay billions BECAUSE they're here, and if we have to pay to get them out, so be it.

I say we "bill" all those liberal progressives that defend illegal aliens "rights" to be here in the first place. They can pay, I'll wave good bye from the border....

  • Peter 1 year ago

Greg, I am sorry you have had bad experiences with undocumented immigrants; however, to suppose that the legality or illegality of one's residence in the US predisposes them to drunkenness is not sound logic. It seems you have drawn such conclusions from your experience; however, your experience is not omniscient. Free resources in the US are without a doubt a reason many migrate illegally from Mexico into the US. However, as mentioned in my post below, US corporations have played a major role in creating such destitution in Mexico that many immigrants are left without a choice but to migrate if they want to survive. Furthermore, much of the criminal activity that comes from Mexico is in response to the unquenchable appetite for drugs that Americans seem to have. The tragedies that undocumented immigrants have committed are horrendous. Yet, the problem goes much deeper and is more complex than what the author of this article would have us believe; likewise is the solution.

Amy, thanks for responding to my post. Montano's immigration status is immaterial to the fact he was drunk. Being an undocumented immigrant does not automatically predispose one to inebriation. This article seems to draw that conclusion and, in doing so, slanders an entire people group. Not all who migrate illegally to the US are criminals or drunkards. I agree that this man should have been deported earlier. However, the scope of this article radiates far beyond this individual. It is clear from the conclusion the author draws in this article that this example is meant to be used as propaganda to paint all other undocumented immigrants in the same light as this individual. It is obvious from several of the other replies to this article that the author is successful in drawing to readers into rage and foment. However, this article would be far more valuable to the reader if it directed him or her to survey the systemic nature of this problem. Fences on borders are a mere band-aid.

Yes. It's should be the same for any criminal in this country-illegal alien or not. It is nice that you've decided to convict him without a trial, though. Gitmo, anyone?
It's called due process which BTW the Nun [had she been arrested for a peace protest, say] would also have gotten-OK, AL?. My point is that this is an antagonistic & reactionary item [I never said it was made up-work on your comprehension skills]. If he were a citizen the nun's death would be OK? What about repeat offenders for DUI who ARE legal? That lessens the effect? This piece is slanted and bigoted. And AMY you have NO WAY OF KNOWING whether or not that nun would still be alive or if she wouldn't have perished within hours or weeks by some other tragedy.

There are more millions of assaults, burlary, etc. None of these crimes would have been committed if our leaders for the last 24 years had followed their oaths of office. That includes our preseny incompetent as well as the 3 before him.
