Our misguided population growth paradigm: accelerating consequences

By Frosty Wooldridge

Denver, Colorado--Last night, in the Mercury Café on California Street, a meeting took place that will change the future of America. Dana Miller, head of www.transitioncolorado.ning.com, introduced documentary film director, Dave Gardner, to an eager audience. He strode to the stage with the confidence of a man filled with the knowledge of his years and the understanding of his mission.

On Gardner’s website, www.growthbusters.com, you may enjoy a film clip with Billy Crystal titled, “City Slickers”, about four guys who lived in the city fifty weeks a year while suffering a lot of “knots in their ropes,” but visited the dude ranch to untie those knots in their minds. The late Jack Palance played a grizzled cowboy who knew the secret to life.

As he rode along with a very confused Billy Crystal, Palance, with a cigarette dangling from his mouth, said, “You know what the secret of life is?” Crystal said, “What?” Palance raised his finger saying, “This!” Crystal said, “Your finger?” Palance said, “One thing, just one thing…you stick to that and everything else don’t mean shit.” Crystal said, “That’s great, but what’s the one thing?” Palance said, “That’s what you gotta’ figure out.”

In the 21st century, America and the human race need to figure out ‘one thing’ in order to survive as a species. What’s that one thing? Right now, Americans stampede on a collision course with their own numbers as they expect to add 100 million people in 26 years by 2035. Americans face the ‘perfect storm’ of overpopulation, energy decline, resource overshoot and economic collapse.

Ironically, few realize it, most dismiss it and our leaders ignore it at all costs.

However, Gardner understands it with a brilliant movie, “Hooked on Growth: Our Misguided Quest for Prosperity.” For a trailer, visit www.growthbusters.com. Gardner said:

• We are hooked on a system that depends on growth
• It no longer provides the prosperity or happiness we seek
• It is unsustainable
• Help the world kick the habit

URBAN GROWTH | POPULATION GROWTH | CONSUMPTION GROWTH | ECONOMIC GROWTH—NOT SUSTAINABLE

Gardner said, “Locally, nationally, and globally, modern society worships Growth Everlasting above all else. Economists preach the gospel of growth. We’ve built a system that has us addicted to growth. Real estate developers, chambers of commerce and economic developers are pushers lobbying and propagandizing to keep us hooked. As a professional filmmaker I decided to produce this film as an intervention. Your friends and family, business associates, elected representatives – and even your priest – all need to see Hooked on Growth, so we can recognize the addiction and begin the recovery. This film examines the superstitions and outdated beliefs we must leave behind in order to become a sustainable society.”

Kenneth Boulding said, “Only economists and fools think you can keep expanding population.”

Gardner presented the Mercury Café audience with a brief trailer about the movie. You will find yourself ‘thinking’ in a new way after seeing it. You may enjoy compelling new understandings of what we and our offspring face if we fail to change course. It’s a little disconcerting, but, much better to understand your addiction so you can kick it—rather than follow it to a suicidal ending, i.e., the late Michael Jackson so much in the news lately.

World Population Day: Let Overpopulation Topic Out of the Closet

The most fascinating calamities in America today stem from overpopulation, but the main stream media avoid any connection whatsoever to hyper-population growth. Charlie Rose, Bill Moyers, Larry King, Jim Lehrer, Lou Dobbs, Bill O’Reilly, Peter Boyles, Charles Gibson, Diane Sawyer, Harry Smith, Robert Siegal, Liane Hanson and all others avoid it like the Bubonic Plague.

Gardner said, “July 11was World Population Day, as declared by the United Nations in 1989 to raise awareness of global population issues. Sadly, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of awareness out there. Of the 6.77 billion people on the planet, too few have either the courage or the awareness to weigh in or do something about the subject. Overpopulation is the proverbial elephant in the room, and it is a big one.

“There is widespread agreement among scientists that we are in overshoot. According to Global Footprint Network, 1.3 planet Earths would be required to sustainably meet the needs of our current population at present levels of consumption and waste. If we continue current upward trends in consumption and population, by 2035 we’ll need 2 Earths. This means we are not acting sustainably. We are using up stuff that we, and/or future generations, are going to need.

“The rate at which we use up stuff is commonly represented in the famous IPAT equation developed by Paul Ehrlich and John Holdren. Simplified, it states that human impact = per capita consumption X population. It doesn’t take a mathematical genius to figure out from this equation that perpetual increase in either consumption or population would require a like decrease in the other in order to avoid increasing human impact on our ecosystems and resource base.”

One of the best parts of Gardner’s website stems from his accurate educational films that bring paradigm shifts. They prove exceptional!

One young lady with a T-shirt that reads, “Growth Busters”, said, “If there is one solution facing our planet today, we must quit chasing more and begin embracing less. And while consumption and emissions are critical parts of any solution, they cannot be effective unless we have less population as well…we’re way above what the planet can sustain…there are so many of us that there is not enough for all…the planet can only sustain 1.5 billion humans…every problem is caused by increasing population…since we need immediate action one of the best things we can do is lower our birthrate…the sooner we move in that direction the better…insist on a sustainable population policy.”

Instead of a miserable future for lots of children, let’s consider a fantastic future for fewer children.

I hope President Obama sees Gardner’s film along with all members of the U.S. Congress. We need them to make the intellectual shift in order to manifest changes that will allow this civilization to prosper in the 21st century.

Gardner’s work will prove prophetic, cogent and compelling. Support his work by visiting his website and sharing it with others. If you can donate, please do so generously. www.growthbusters.com

As Jack Palance said, “That one thing is what you gotta’ figure out.” For the United States and humanity worldwide, we must figure out human overpopulation or Mother Nature will figure it out for us—and that won’t be pretty.

The national website may be visited at www.transitionus.com for anyone wanting to join members in other states.

Ahh the familiar smell of mendacity wafting off the frosty freak show.
    The subject? The overpopulation lie.
For folks with brains. Look into the real demographic trends and you will see the birthrate is below replacement in most of the world. Mexico is aging more rapidly than the US. Europe is dying off. The eugenicist freaks like frosty have done the deed. For a preview of what is to come look at Japan. The did not have a baby boom so we get to see what will happen to the world. Russian population is falling by 700,000 a year. Look here..

Frosty, I wish you would quit wasting your precious time on forums like this, If there is one thing I have noticed about knuckleheads who think that overpopulation is of no consequence to a nation, even somehow an advantage, like Ben Wattenbergs ilk, it's that they believe this fanatically, totally, and wholeheartedly. Just as you and I believe the opposite, because we have eyes that see the proof in places like China, India, Indonesia, etc. Let it go, for your own sanity and try to find a venue where people like ourselves can discuss the ramifications and build a strong lobby.

Ddoes it make any sense to demand the people already here cut back on their water, ect & then bring in more & more immigrants (legal and illegal)? Wouldn't this negate any conservation measures taken? How about the people already here who are unemployed?

To compare this to eugenics is dumb. Yes, the birth rate is falling in places. The problem is here in the 60s/70s, were told to have 0 population growth because of the grave danger to this planet (so it was said), but then simultaneously, Kennedy passed the Immigration bill and this together with the 1986 Amnesty and the corporate push for more workers (visa and illegals) exploded the population growth here. So now as a consequence, we have a massive population increase. I don't think Frosty's calling for eugenics or the Rockefeller idea, this is about controlling the immigration rates. If one likes the idea of Balkanism because people aren't encouraged to learn English anymore & retain their own culture,I see trouble brewing

Fred, Eugenics is a compulsory and forcefully guided reproductive policy. Being concerned for the Human family and the Earth we live on has nothing to do with eugenics. It is simply being thoughtful, and I have never heard Frosty advocate anything remotely resembling eugenics. But keep your head buried, and when the world population hits 10, 15, 20 billion and the world is a living hell for nearly everyone, we will see who the idiot is.

The US is the only developed country with a birthrate at replacement. The "hoards" of mexicans coming here will not keep coming. We need the people especially the young ones.
Get the demographic winter movie or download it from a torrent.
Whatever you want to call it eugenics is the goal and the program that is in place. Idiots like frosty either don't know what they are doing or they are part of the plan. Society has been engineered to think in terms of overpopulation and scarcity consciousness in order to get to the situation we are at now.
Birthrates are not just "down in some places" this is a global problem. After 2050 the population will plummet. It is basically too late and we are still arguing weather or not idiots like frosty are for eugenics or loving "population control"?

The problem isn't so much too many people
it is some people using up stuff like 1 million others.
The average American middle class person uses up as much stuff in a lifetime as thousands of others.
So the solution is to reduce Americans or to bankrupt them that seems to be well underway with the 18 trillion they just stole from the US people.that ought to make American middle class turn into third world peasants by 2010.

He cries about overpopulation, yet he and Tipper ground out 5 kids. The real problem is elites who start wars. Wars serve 2 purposes: kill and destroy. War serves to destroy surplus goods, thus creating a shortage. All of the wars America has fought since the formation of the UN were completely unnecessary, and have only eaten up what would have otherwise been a surplus of consumable goods! This business of "overpopulation" is a complete lie, as is the theory of global warming!

Anyone in the USA can see it progressing in CA. The symptoms of overpopulation explode with species extinction, gridlock, water shortages, 32 million on food stamps, poverty, et al. Then readers come up with ridiculous charges such as eugenics, NWO conspiracy, etc. I only advocate for birth control and family planning that allows a stable and balanced human population on this planet. It cannot be any more simple and logical. We're facing the addition of 100 million in this country. We cannot sustain another 100 million. We're in serious overshoot right now with water crisis, energy decline and loss of quality of life. How can I present this better? I'm trying to educate.

Then check out front page magazine's article on Obama's science Czar Holdren and his book on global authoritarian enforcement of abortion, birth control etc. Holdren wrote it in 1977. It is NWO all the way and is about using the force of global police powers to force sterilization, abortion and anything else to reduce populations. Now he espouses this same bunk on climate control. Another false crisis used to put draconian controls(high taxes) on the world populations. Your credibility is nil with most people who are still free thinkers and can logically look at both sides. This swill assumes the earth is the only habitat, when every 5th grader knows there is the solar system and the rest of the galaxy, and the entire universe to fill... and we have the technology, and the periodic table, a set of lego essentially, and the know how to expand outward to infinity and beyond. The only people against growth are those who already have theirs, and feel threatened by others growth, and are too ignorant to understand what they have and how they got it, and how they are no more special, and no less special than those wanting to get theirs too. The issue is not growth, the issue is mindless exploitative growth. Big difference. We are supposed to grow, and fortunately, we have an infinite amount of room and endless supply of atoms to do it, and finally the awareness of the rules that govern it all, i.e. periodic table, and math, and plenty of people to enjoy it all together.

The more the merrier, especially when you look upward and realize we can never overpopulate the universe, and that there are too few of us when compared with the vastness of space, and that the only thing holding us back does not even exist, unless you "believe" the lack of knowledge is something that can "exist"

Frosty reported on a man named Dave Gardner who is making a film on overpopulation and resource depletion. Simple facts trump emotional responses. The earth is finite and at some point, population growth will be stabilized by humans themselves through birth control or Mother Nature will do it brutally. Today Mother Nature kills 18 million humans annually via starvation. The earth is finite. You cannot pour 2 gallons into a 1 gallon tank. You cannot stuff 20 people into a car built for 4 people. You cannot fill a pool built for 50 people with 400 people. You cannot fill a movie theater with 100 seats by stuffing 500 into it. Everything has limits. The US has enjoyed 2.03 fertility since 1970 so we enjoy a stable society. All we need to do is reduce immigration from current 2.4 million annually to 100,000 to balance our population within our carrying capacity. Then, help other countries with family planning, food production and water purification. Reasonable, logical, rational. FW

Lets look at that statement, for in it is the key to understanding... everything...

"Everything" by definition has no limits, the key part of that word being "EVERY", which contains yet another fragment, EVER, as in for-ever and ever.

Only "something" has limits, i.e. the limits which de-fine it as that particular some-thing, which, by de-finition is arbitrary because in reality, everything is one huge infinite thing of infinite, boundless dimension, and characteristic, every possibility permutated infinite times with every other possibility, and all distinctions are purely arbitrary and can never describe it adequately, for you cannot scribe everything about everything because everything has no limits, for it if did, it would not be "everything". Make sense.

Just accept that there is an infinite amount of "everything", and that it is a good thing.

The only thing that does not exist is time, because it is n

    Samantha,
If you have read my work and my website, I promote total reduction of immigration to 100,000 maximum per year so we don't have to be forced into the horrific future we face with added population. Right! We aren't doing it to ourselves. Immigration of 2.4 million annually into the USA is doing it. My new book:America on the Brink: The Next Added 100 Million Americans addresses immigration and calls for a 10 year moratorium and only 100,000 annually. I have never promoted eugenics, forced population reduction of abortion or anything like that. I promote birth control and family planning so we may keep choice in this civilization. If you investigate, I am a very rational, reasonable and caring person for all of humanity. FW

The issue is not numbers of people, the issue is lack of leadership, and too much exploitation of the people via intentionally dumbing them down and using them as machines and consumers to fuel a failed economic model, keeping in mind Communism is simply Capitalism perfected, and is in fact the preferred economic model of the Capitalists, where they own not just plant and equipment, but they own the PEOPLE TOO.

Now that the exploited, coerced into being robotic people have built the pyramids for the exploiters and those benefiting from the exploitation ignorantly, they want to get rid of those same very same people, the exploited.

Too bad, you benefited from these people's suffering, you cannot just get rid of them like so much of our disposable economy once they have completed their mission.

This is the problem, reducing numbers of people is NOT the solution, whereas adopting a Robotic Wageless Economy is the solution.
