US Unemployment up. Diversity Visa Lottery continues.

Diversity Visa Lottery delivers 55,000 new residents yearly

The August unemployment rate for the United States was 9.7%, the highest it has been since June of 1983. Despite all of these Americans out of work, the government still plans on allowing another 1million plus people to immigrate to the US this year. In addition to that, something called the Diversity Visa Lottery kicks off on October 2nd and runs until November 30. A record 17 million people are expected to apply.

Mandated by Congress and administered by the Department of State, the Visa Lottery is exactly like it sounds. People from all over the world in countries supposedly under-represented in the United States throw their names into an electronic hat and with a little luck…voila!---they hit the visa jackpot. They can then step around those already waiting in line and get on the fastest plane, boat, train or canoe to their new home in the US.

The annual event makes visa’s (green cards) available to 55,000 people each year based on their country of origin and either a high school education OR two years of job experience. There are 33 countries (see the full list here) that qualify for “Visapalooza 2011.” Among them are North Korea, Israel, Japan, Afghanistan, Taiwan, Iran and Iraq. The lunacy of our government policies is almost unfathomable at times. Since when do we have a shortage of people from Taiwan for example or a need to let another North Korean in the US? I don’t believe they like us very much. I can understand Brunei or Bhutan (also on the list). I didn’t even know there was a country named Bhutan (it is in the Eastern Himalaya’s) and I can sort of get the logic behind giving someone from Maldives a break or two. But really…55,000 new immigrants with relatively no skills based solely on country of origin, race or ethnicity? This while nearly fifteen million Americans are out of work.

Even people who support the program call it racist.

The odds of having your name picked this year are about .003%. My cab driver in Las Vegas a few months back hit the lottery in 2008. He was from Lebanon. He couldn’t believe his good fortune. One minute he was unemployed in a refugee camp and the next he was a driving a cab with a cool new apartment in Vegas. Only in America.

Aside from our own poor and unemployed, we already have millions of poor illegal immigrants with their US born children working low income jobs that feed at the public trough that the government can not deal with. Now they are bring in more marginally skilled foreign nationals and their families for the tax payer to subsidize all in the name of touchy-feely diversity.

Yes, 55,000 Green Cards are given to folks around the world excluding few countries like (China, India, Vietnam etc .. ). These folks take the short cut route to Green Card without standing in the line while folks who come legally to the US have to wait for an average of 7-8 yrs to get a Green Card. This is one of the ridiculous provisions in the immigration law which will be scrapped in the new immigration bill. It makes no sense to award a Green Card to anyone who has not put his roots in the country and has not even paid 1 dollar in taxes. Folks who take this route have all the privileges that they can avail under a Green Card while folks who take the normal legal route have to wait for 7-8yrs on an average for these benefits. This is another reason why the immigration systems needs a major overhaul.

Truly, the inmates are running the asylum -- and what does this say about us, as voters who put such idiots in office?? If we do not vote against EVERY incumbent currently in office -- we are ALL morons, regardless of our political leanings. Fire them ALL in coming elections!

We have nothing but traitors running the Senate and Congress, that abuse the rights of the American citizenry on almost a weekly basis.

Carl, the politics of the leaders of a particular country, usually have very little to do with the beliefs of the people who live there. Do you really think that most North Koreans think like Kim jung il?? As far as the lottery is concerned, this system was put in place by Senator Edward Kennedy and voted on by our representatives in Congress to help increase diversity in our population - a source of strength.

Read History, you make a good point. They need to stop that crap. So many people waiting to get green cards here and we are just giving them away to these people abroad w/o any real reason.

The illegals here have more of a stake to it than those bastards. But I guess one could say they are illegals nonetheless!

jstephen wilson, are you on something? What kind of logic is it to compare a representative democracy, with a dictatorship??? Of course a dictatorship doesn't listen to its people. Come to think of it, maybe that's what your'e saying, that the U.S. is already a dictatorship, since the majority of Americans want the illegal immigration of millions of foreign nationals, who drain the social servicesl of Americans and are NOT A SOURCE OF STRENGTH--TO STOP!! Your comment is meaningless. Diversity hasn't a thing to do with illegal immigration. P.S. Mr. Wilson, are you perhaps exploiting the undocmented to enrich yourself as so many Americans are and passing the costs of their upkeep to the rest of the taxpaying citizenry?? I have noticed that's usually the case with people who speak so altruistically about illegal immigration.

I wish we had this kind of thing in Australia. We've got thousands of skilled Chinese, Arabs, and Indians flooding through our borders, but hardly any Africans, Hispanics, or Europeans to "keep the balance", so to speak. It seems like a good program to prevent yourselves from being overrun by only one ethnic group.
