Are children of illegal aliens bankrupting Maryland?

Maryland’s foreign-born population has grown by 34.6 percent while its native-born population has increased by 3.3 percent. .Public school enrollment of students who require special instruction in English has soared even more, rising by 93.5 percent from 2000 to 2008 while overall enrollment declined slightly.

A pair of recently released documents on illegal aliens in Maryland discuss the effect the spending has had on the state treasury. Both agree the cash-strapped state is spending at least $448 million on children of undocumented aliens per year and more than $100 million on health care costs.

The difference is in how one counts citizens born to parents who are in the state illegally. For example, the Federation for American Immigration Reform includes children of illegals when it compiles its figures. As a consequence, FAIR reports Marylanders spend more than $966 million annually on education for an estimated 80,800 children of illegal aliens. Nearly $250 million is spent on providing special English instruction to an estimated 35,000 children of illegal aliens. About 9.6 percent of the K-12 public school students in Maryland are children of illegal aliens.

The Immigration Policy Center excluded U.S. children of illegals when it countered the FAIR report this week. It says 68 percent (or $966.4 million) of FAIR’s “$1.4 billion” estimate consists of K-12 education costs for the children of unauthorized immigrants—of whom 73 percent are U.S.-born, U.S.-citizens who have at least one unauthorized parent. Likewise, another 12 percent (or $167.2 million) of the “$1.4 billion” figure consists of the “costs of medical care related to illegal immigration”—yet 65 percent of these expenses are Medicaid costs for U.S.-born, U.S.-citizen children with an unauthorized parent.

IPC points out these are children who will go on to become tax-paying “natives” when they are adult workers.

IPC did not address FAIR’s claims on incarceration. The cost of incarcerating illegal aliens in Maryland’s state and county prisons amounts to about $29 million a year — not including related law enforcement and judicial expenses or the monetary costs of the crimes that led to the incarceration, according to FAIR.

However, as the report explains, this number is probably low. Several governments, including but not limited to Baltimore City and Prince George’s County, are not counted in the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program, which is administered by the Office of Justice Programs in the U.S. Department of Justice.

Enough with the illegal immigrant junk! You know whats bankrupting Maryland, babybummers like you who love to hear everything but the truth. Get tough on crime, so we have an endless war on drugs which only creates a welfare system out of the judicial system. Cops, Judges and Jailers making more money than drug dealers. Fifteen thousand Baltimoreans dead in forty years and nobody cares because they are young black men. Then you complain about the gangs, but guess what Andy, ironically there is no one left to raise these kids or mentor them. Or how about that other great bastion of waste, the U.S. Military. How much money has been spent away since Eisenhower warned us about the Congressional Military-Industrial complex. All of those lives wasted and all of that money gone, for what to protect America from the likes of Korea,Vietnam,Grenada,Kuwait,Iraq. Places where it was none of our business being in the first place. But keep talking about the illegal immigrants. Silly Babbybummer!!!!!

Baltimoron. Ideas like a modest foreign policy, and drug legalization have nothing to do with illegal immigration. You are silly. Personally, I think illegal immigration and our oversea spending are both bankrupting our country. If you do not think illegal immigration is not a problem, then you are very naive.

Huh, you think that I am naive. Modest foreign policy? Was that a joke. Fifty years of spending half of your gdp on a military that was designed for the 1950's you are naive. Just ask Brazil whose electric grid was taken out for three days by a few Chinese spending about ten thousand dollars. Keep whining about the illegal immigrants, while you enjoy that cheap food they picked for you. How about selling out your grandkids future so you can buy some cheap goods from China. Oh wait you already did. Unless you are Native American shut up. Just because you were lucky enough to have relatives arrive here a few generations ago doesn't mean that you are any better than those arriving here tomorrow. Come up with some solutions other than whining, and I don't want to hear about some stupid wall the length of our Mexican border. You are naive.

Because illegal immigrants occupy a small share of the work force — about 5 percent — and work low-skilled jobs at lower wages than other workers, their overall influence on the economy is trivial, according to the report, sponsored by the Migration Policy Institute, a pro-immigration think tank in Washington.
"The fate of the U.S. economy does not rest on what we do on illegal immigration," said Gordon H. Hanson, author of the report and economics professor at the University of California-San Diego.
Illegal immigrants contribute a tiny 0.03 percent of the U.S. gross domestic product, with that gain going to employers who save money on cheap labor, the report says, while their cost to the economy is 0.10 percent of GDP, which mainly comes from public education and publicly funded emergency health care.
The net impact at minus 0.07 percent of GDP means that illegal immigrants have an essentially neutral effect on the economy, Hanson said.
The report does not factor in the spending o

These numbers are very alarming. Financial resources that are being spent on indivduals that break our laws, meanwhile making every attempt to CHANGE OUR LAWS to legalize their illegal entrance and occupation, have children for the primary purpose to remain in this country while we foot the bill toward healthcare and education cost, is an outrage.

Where else in the world or what other nation is allowing this to happen?

Remember all of this during this 2010 election year people. Undocumented illegal aliens are permitted to break our laws. All politicians want are their illegal votes. We pay, literally, for this voting accommodation toward politicians that support their illegal activity.

The law is the law. Racism is against the law. No one is above the law. Everyone tries to change the law in their favor. We are a nation of laws. We need to make our opinions heard by the politicians so they can vote for the right laws. Other than that it is speculation on what is moral and correct. The government is suppose to be of the people. The will of the people should prevail but this rarely happens when politicians take control. What does the majority think about this issue? This is the way we govern fairly.
