You may be a green card lottery winner!
The U.S. Department of State Kentucky Consular Center is now sending winning notification letters to the 100,000 winners of last year’s DV-2010 green card lottery. Winners will be officially notified by mail no later than July 1, 2009. Only the first 50,000 persons that receive winning notices can receive visas. Therefore, you should act promptly if your name is drawn since you have a higher probability of winning a green card if your application is processed faster.
If you are already living inside the U.S., you may be able to file for adjustment of status with CIS. In most cases, you will need to be in lawful immigration status. You also have the option to apply for an immigrant visa abroad.
Those who successfully pass their visa immigration interview at the U.S. embassy will have six months from the date their visa is issued to enter the United States.
In many cities in the U.S., CIS is having difficulty processing applications in a timely manner. See if the local CIS office has an “expedite” program for lottery winners. If not, you may want to file for an immigrant visa overseas since the U.S. Embassy may process the application faster than the local CIS office. Of course, you can only do this if you can leave the U.S. for a few months.
If you were not notified that you won, then your registration was not chosen and you have not won the green card lottery. You can reregister for this coming 2009 visa lottery in October.
If you are eligible to adjust your status in the U.S. and your required documents are overseas, immediately ask a family member or a close friend to fax your required documents to you and mail you the originals or certified copies. If you are living in the U.S. unlawfully or illegally and you win, you should immediately consult an immigration attorney.
This year the State Department promised to provide a procedure on the Electronic Diversity Visa (EDV) web site to check whether you won or not. This process has not yet been put in place as of May 19, 2009. It should be available by July 1. All you will need is your confirmation number provided during your entry last year.
