Many people see hypnosis as a parlor trick that only the weak-minded fall for. Because of this attitude, it follows that there would be a number of myths surrounding its use. The mystery shrouded by magic must be revealed. Once you understand the truth of hypnosis, then you can begin benefiting from its hundreds of uses.
Myth # 1: People are "asleep" when under hypnosis. This is not true. When a person is in a trance of any kind they are awake and aware of what's going on. The myth comes from hypnotists using the word "sleep" when hypnotizing a subject. "Sleep" is used because the conscious mind understands the meaning. Some hypnotists prefer to use the phrase, "hypnotic state." Either way, it is not sleep in the sense you sleep at night.
Myth # 2: People forget everything that happens while hypnotized. Again, not true. While in a trance, being awake and aware, you can remember everything. Because of hypnotic amnesia that occurs in deep trances, the memory may not be available immediately, but it is still there.
Myth # 3: People in a trance lose control and are at the mercy of the hypnotist. No matter how deep in trance you may be, you never lose control of your moral code or values. When you see someone do something ridiculous or outrageous while hypnotized, that's because they want to do those things for some reason.
Myth # 4: People are at risk of revealing their darkest secrets. While interesting, again this is not true. In a trance, you remain in control and nothing is revealed unless you want to reveal it. For this reason and the fact that "false memories" can be created in subjects, anything gained from hypnosis cannot be used in a court of law.
Myth # 5: Only gullible or stupid people can be hypnotized. This is absolutely untrue! As a matter of fact, the smarter a person is, the more likely they can be hypnotized. Anyone can be hypnotized, once the hypnotist finds their suggestibility type (more on that later).
Myth # 6: People can get stuck in a trance and maybe never be able to regain consciousness. Once hypnotized, the worst thing that could possible happen is you actually fall asleep, take a nap and eventually wake on your own. No one has ever been "stuck" in hypnosis.
Hypnosis can be used to help people stop smoking, deal with anxiety, depression, and stress. It can help with stage freight, enhance sports ability, stop bad habits, help someone lose weight, and conquer fears and phobias. There are literally hundreds of ways hypnosis might help. Once you get past the myths and really look at the facts, hypnosis is another alternative, one that could help you today.
