Want to know Lincoln's thoughts leading up to his famous Gettysburg Address? How did Neil Armstrong prepare for his small step? What was a young Hitler like? These questions and more are answered through the eyes of Twitter at Historical Tweets.
Historical Tweets also clears up some of the muddied history of Twitter. Contrary to popular opinion, Twitter was created long before Richard Gere created Buddhism in the 90's or Madonna created yoga.
I'm not sure if Twitter was around 75 million years ago when Xenu brought billions of people to Earth in that crazy spacecraft, but it's first known use was in the Garden of Eden, where it was used in some sort of religious ceremony as a way to gain access to God. From that point, Twitter has been a mainstay in history.
Just look at some of these great historical quotes taken from the pages of Twitter:
@BuzzAldrin headed to the set... i mean moon. LOL. You been practicing slow motion "no gravity" walk? -- Neil_Armstrong
Toilet salesman says, "so comfortable you'll think you died and gone to heaven." --elvisP
@DeQuille If I had more time, I would have written a shorter tweet -- marktwain
The best part is this exceedingly clever look at history doesn't stop with just the website. Pretty soon, we'll be able to take historical tweets into the John for a little -- uh -- light reading. Historical Tweets -- The Book -- will arrive at your local online book store on April 27th, 2010. So make sure you reserve a copy!
Until then, have a blast browsing through the website. And don't forget to see what John Lennon had to say after a media conference where he compared The Beatles to Jesus or what King Herod was tweeting about in 4 BC.
For more added fun, try going to a random historical tweet.
