The Super Bowl is not just the championship game for football, it's also the Super Bowl of advertising. Even if the matchup doesn't quite intrigue you, we can all agree that the Super Bowl ads are entertaining. But what about those ads that don't quite make it to the game? There's a great history of banned Super Bowl commercials.
The big news for this year revolves around the banned commercial for Mancrush.com, a gay dating site. But why was it banned? Because it shows two men kissing? Or because it shows a Viking fan kissing a Packers fan?
Also making news is a Super Bowl commercial that hasn't been banned. Pro-choice advocates called upon CBS to ban a pro-life advertisement starring Tim Tebow, though I'm pretty sure Tebow doesn't strip down or kiss a Packers fan or anything.
Here's a look at some banned Super Bowl commercials from the past and one advertisement that made it into the Super Bowl only to be censored later.
The (Almost) Banned 2006 GoDaddy Commercial
This one wasn't actually banned, but it was absolutely hilarious. It was also subsequently censored from further airings, but we've been able to get our hands on a fully uncensored version thanks to the magic of YouTube.
The Banned 2006 Budweiser Commercial
This one is not just funny. It also teaches a very good lesson on why you should never take advantage of your local bartender.
The Banned 2007 Budweiser Commercial
Always look before you leap? Be careful where you skinny dip? Or should we call the moral of this commercial "who cares, I'm a guy and I'm swimming naked with a girl"?
The Banned 2008 GoDaddy Commercial
Of course, GoDaddy isn't going to be regulated to a single commercial being banned. In fact, they've made an art out of being rejected from the Super Bowl.
The Banned 2009 PETA Commercial
This commercial gives an entirely new meaning to Going Green.
