Jesus Christ appears in Portuguese Playboy magazine.  Jesus Christ is making an appearance in July's Portuguese version of Playboy magazine.

The magazine spread featuring Jesus is meant as an homage to Nobel winning writer Jose Saramago. Saramago, an atheist and the only Portugese author to receive a Nobel prize, died last month.

The images of Christ on the cover and within the pages of the magazine are inspired by a Saramago novel, The Gospel According to Jesus Christ, a fictional reimagining of Christ's life as a flawed human being.

Jesus is on the cover of the July Playboy, sitting on a bed, holding a scantily clad female. The title of Saramago's book is engraved into the headboard of the bed.

The other explicit images in the magazine show Jesus watching a lesbian sex scene, standing next to a street prostitute, and looking over the shoulder of a half naked woman reminiscent of a Catholic school girl.

No doubt not a few Christians will take offense to the imagery, even if it does have an ostensibly literary purpose. Yet it seems fairly certain that no fatwas will be issued, and no death threats will be made. For this little bit of sanity, Christians and non-Christians alike can take some comfort.

Edward, many western atheists have been brought up immersed in the Christian religion. So there is no mystery here, as this is what we know well. For the record, I have read lots of atheist critism of Islam and other religions.

The Christians have spent a great deal of time trashing Islam for forbidding images of their leader.

Let's see if they can turn the other cheek about their own.

A fictional re imagining of a fictional character's life....

The idea of this 'person' has been the foundation for 2000 years of abuse of women, children, strangers; and it has formed the foundation of an organization based in abuse and subjugation to amass untold wealth at the cost of its millions of adherents.

    Exposure is an excellent idea.

It's not *that* interesting. Jesus is the one we're most regularly bludgeoned with, figuratively speaking. Jesus is the fiction that we *most often* get shoved in our faces by people trying to tell us to turn off our intelligence and go along with the sheep, just like the parable.
And Jesus is the one whose followers are least likely *not to notice* that we simply don't want to hear it.

"it's interesting how atheists spend so much time on Jesus"

And the first post is the "Oh so oppressed and persecuted" victim card played by a Christian. What a joke.

I stand with my Christian brothers & sisters who must be heart-broken at this porn-baron publisher raking in his filthy lucre by the slanderous portrayal of a noble creature. Is this the mark of civilised values?

Walter, you - exactly - trying to put fear into whomever commenter you directed yours at. It's ridiculous and won't work, but It's okay. Own it.
