So, the governor of Florida, Charlie Crist, has let it slip that the reason Florida has not been hit by any major storms since he took office is because he has asked God to spare us. His preferred prayer method of choice is to place prayer requests in the Western Wall in Jerusalem every year. He isn’t taking credit for the lack of hurricanes, that praise goes obviously to God.
This is an interesting story to say the least. And we certainly have been free of excessive storm damage in the past few years. We haven’t even needed to put up our storm shutters. But somehow, I doubt this has anything to do with our governor’s apparently special relationship with God.
If we believe Charlie’s claim, doesn’t that also mean we have to believe that God didn’t like our previous governor. After all, we suffered through some really ravaging storms under Jeb Bush. Perhaps the fault for those storms lies with the people who voted for Bush in 2000, as some have claimed (see link to snopes below).
No – I think this is just a cynical attempt by Crist to encourage the faithful among us to view him as God’s chosen one so that they will support his bid for Senator next year. You have to admit – even if you discount the whole God angle – that given the opportunity to pray for anything he wanted, he chose to ask for protection for his state is pretty impressive. Even if it did come at the expense of our neighboring states, who have been hit with really horrendous storms in the past few years.
