Global human trafficking roundup (July 22, 2010)

NORTH AMERICA

California: U.S. Marshal says pimping is the fastest growing crime in San Diego. Pimps search for young girls from MySapce, middle school and high school campus, and local shopping malls to force them into prostitution. Based on the past cases investigated, he says that children are exploited in various places like motels, a confined or an isolated premise, etc. The law signed by the governor on Monday would change the way the prostituted children are treated by the police. Instead of sending them to juvenile facilities, the new legislation will allow children to be sent to rehabilitation center.

Florida: Jeffrey Epstein, a hedge fund mogul, walks free after multiple charges related to pedophilia. According to the report, he has escaped the criminal penalties of committing child trafficking and prostitution with his wealth. He also allegedly paid teenager to bring other teen girls to his home two or three times a day. The local police says that at least 17 girls were allegedly victimized by Epstein and the youngest one was 14.

LATIN AMERICA

Bahamas:  New research says that teen prostitution is high in Bahamas. According to the report, many teenagers look for sugar daddy who would buy them gifts and give them money in exchange of sex. Because many ignore the statutory rape law, and abortion is easy to get, the research says that the children become more vulnerable to child prostitution.

EUROPE

UK: Police arrested seven people who were involved in human trafficking during the raids. Police also said that they rescued five victims in connection to the raids, and they are currently assisted by the specially trained staff.

ASIA

Cambodia: An authority rescued more than thirty young women at two government sanctioned labor recruitment firms. The victims allegedly lived in a poor condition and were not allowed to leave the premise without a permission. The authority also found 24 underage girls in one company, but the director at the company said that he had no idea that the company hired underage girls.

Australia: Asian workers are exploited with labor on strawberry farms. According to the report, they are subject to underpayment or no payment, forced labor, abuse, and humiliation. According to the federal authority, police identified more than 100 potential victims for the past two years.

Thailand:  Rights group urged Thai government not to deport or repatriate Burmese migrants. Many Burmese migrants sent home are either forced into prostitution or join the military service against their will. The rights group also argued that Thailand's deportation/repatriation policy has not helped the country reduce the number of illegal migrants.

India: Police arrested six people who allegedly kidnapped and sold a 3 year old child. The traffickers were the friends of the girl's father and told the child's caretaker that they could take the baby to her father. When her father found out that the daughter was missing, he immediately notified the police to find his 3 year old child.

AFRICA

Ghana: The authority announced that the police arrested 19 human traffickers and 625 victims were rehabilitated last year. She also added that human trafficking is the one of the two biggest crimes affecting women and children in the country along with domestic violence.
