Global human trafficking news roundup ( March 3, 2010)

NORTH AMERICA

Maryland: The police called for a conference for tougher legislation against human trafficking in the state. The police demonstrated a few recent cases involving internet advertisement for prostitution, which coerced women into sexual exploitation. Also, three arrests were made on charges of human trafficking. One of them owned a website business in New York; another man owned an internet escort service of prostitution and human trafficking. The other one recruited 16 year old girls in D.C. The teenage victims were lured into modeling shoots and became subject to forced prostitution. 

New York: Somalie Mam, a sex trafficking survivor, spoke about human trafficking in Cambodia at Fordham University. She said that 70% of the patron in the Cambodian brothels at the capital city are local males. Since women's equal rights are not guaranteed by the law, children are often subject to sexual exploitation or human trafficking. Also, Manhattan launches cybercrime and Identity Theft bureau. The bureau will enhance the district attorney's ability to fight against high technology crime including child exploitation. 

Nevada: A man, a convicted sex offender, pleaded to guilty yesterday to having sex with a 15 year old teenager and possessing child pornography. He met her on a social networking site for iPhone. 

LATIN AMERICA

Nicaragua: A couple was arrested a few days ago for trafficking college students into Mexico and Guatemala for sexual exploitation. This was a fruit of the government's increasing efforts to fight against human trafficking. A Tennessee based nonprofit organization representative met with the country's government authority to discuss further mechanisms to combat human trafficking in the country.

Mexico:  A leader of sex trafficking ring from Mexico was captured. He has been running away from the authority nearly for five years. He was charged with forcing young immigrant women into prostitution through coercion, rape, and physical abuse. 

ASIA

Philippines: A Singaporean woman was arrested for assisting other foreigners to use the country as a transit point to illegally enter the neighboring countries. 

Thailand: The police cracks down on beggars to combat human trafficking rings. As a result, 13 beggars and children on the street were arrested. The police also confiscated their personal belongings and clothes. It is common for  Thai children to be hired by the illegal migrants on the streets for begging. 

Jordan: The national anti-human trafficking strategy was launched yesterday. The government representative said that though human trafficking is not common in Jordan, a few cases were reported last year. 

AFRICA

South Africa: A man was accused of human trafficking. He was arrested over the last weekend, but current is out on bail. He allegedly trafficked a woman from Ukraine, who worked as a stripper in South Africa. The charge was brought against him when he was demanding another man for money to bring her into the country. 

Liberia: Liberia launches its analysis report on human trafficking. According to the report, human trafficking of women and children for labor exploitation and organ trafficking are prevalent.
