Global human trafficking news roundup (June 8, 2010)

NORTH AMERICA

Florida: A man is going to a trial for raping and forcing a young woman into prostitution at a strip club in St. Petersburg. According to the report, the victim testified that he forced her to have sex with me and drugged her to calm her down even though she was pregnant. 

Texas:  A smuggling ringleader was sentenced 17 years in jail for smuggling more than 70 people from Mexico. The police found 17 people dead, two others died later from dehydration, suffocation, and overheating. The surviving victims testified that they tried to kick out a signal light to try to get attention from a passing motorist. 

Hawaii:  Labor trafficking victims testify against their employer before the court. They said that some of them were underpaid and lived in a modified storage container on the farm. Each worker is from Thailand and promised a good paying job in Hawaii. They also paid $20,000 to come to Hawaii. One of the victims said that they were given moldy bread to eat. 

Virginia: The police arrested three people at a massage parlor in Leesburg. The police said that all of them were Korean background, but their residential status is currently unclear. This is the fourth message parlor that the police charged with prostitution or sex trafficking related offense. 

EUROPE

Ireland: The first conviction was made yesterday under the government's anti-human trafficking legislation. According to the report, 10 people have been prosecuted since the implement of the law 2 years ago. Five of them were found guilty of running a prostitution in Britain and Ireland, and the other five who contributed to the information to prosecutions were taken outside of the state

Iceland: The Supreme court increased the jail sentence of a woman from 2 and 1/2 to 3 and 1/2. She was convicted with numerous charges including that of human trafficking by the lower court. The Supreme Court not only upheld the decision of the lower court but also increased the penalty for the women. 

ASIA

The Philippines: Un calls for immediate stop to human trafficking in Panoy. The Philippines is the third largest source of migrant workers, and the number of victims reached 80,000. 

Israel: The police arrested a head of the prostitution ring leader who trafficked women over Egyptian border from Eastern Europe. He was charged with human trafficking, rape, and operation of brothels. The police also said that he and his gang members were planning on expand the operation to Turkish controlled northern Cyprus. 

Cambodia: Eight Cambodian men who were trafficked to India are coming home to their country. They allegedly thought that they were going to Thailand with a promise of a good job from an agent, but ended up working in fishing boats in India. The Indian authority was going to send them back to Thailand thinking that they were Thai based on their fake Thai passports. 

AFRICA

South Africa: The police found a 17 year old at a brothel in Cape Town. She was brought into the town as a babysitter but ended up working at a brothel. According to the report, the brothel has only been operated for a month, and she has worked there for a week.
