Howard Stern called absent co-host Artie Lange "cuckoo" during Wednesday morning's Howard Stern Show broadcast.
"Artie's cuckoo," said Howard Stern matter-of-factly. "Artie's got a problem-a life and death problem. You want an update? Here it is: he's got a mental illness."
Stern lashed out at a caller Tuesday who criticized him for not giving his audience regular updates about Artie Lange's status since the Howard Stern Show co-host's violent suicide attempt by stabbing in early January.
Wednesday morning's "cuckoo" statement was a message directed at any other audience members frustrated by the Artie Lange blackout.
Howard Stern let his audience know that just because he's not talking about Artie Lange on air doesn't mean that the beleaguered comedian isn't on his mind. Stern said that he thinks about Lange's suicide attempt "every single day". He also warned his audience against holding out hope for more Artie Lange updates any time soon.

"If I did get an update, it would probably be in private," said Howard Stern. "I don't think his family gives a s--- about updating our audience."
Artie Lange was last heard on the Howard Stern Show in mid December 2009.
