Howard Stern lashed out at a caller inquiring about the status of comedian Artie Lange during Tuesday morning's Howard Stern Show.

The caller, who got on air by stating that she wanted to talk about Howard Stern's continued discussion of the rumors that he could replace Simon Cowell on American Idol, quickly switched the topic to inquiring about Artie Lange. The caller stated that Stern's continued discussion of the American Idol rumors was due to a lack of other comedic content in the absence of Artie Lange:

"You know what it really is?" said the caller, identified as "Dina from Houston". "It's you missing Artie Lange. That's honestly what it is. It's a lack of content and you just keep going on it."

Artie Lange shouldn't be 'discussed and dissected'

"Listen," replied Howard Stern. "Certainly, I miss Artie..."

The caller cut him off: "Then do your audience a favor and at least update us...I'm not the only one who wants to know what's going on with Artie." "Dina" then went on to complain that she had signed up for an extended subscription to Sirius XM, and had "only heard Artie three times" before he was sent on the medical leave that preceded his violent suicide attempt in early January.

After a furious rant about the caller's ignorance and lack of empathy, Howard Stern stated matter-of-factly: "Listen, maybe I need Artie, but you better get used to it without Artie."

Artie Lange suicide attempt leaves Howard Stern speechless

Howard Stern Show co-host Robin Quivers added: "You can't get water out of a rock."

Howard Stern continued:

"Artie's got multiple problems, and the Artie update is, there's no Artie update. Artie's doing his thing. I don't have one bit-one clue what's going on with Artie. I just wish him well and I hope he recovers at some point in his life, where he doesn't want to take his life because I feel it could be very beautiful for him. I feel he's missing out on a lot. That's the Artie update. Artie's terrific, but Artie's not on the show. We don't have a bit of information. Not one of us."

Howard Stern's statement Tuesday is the most direct one he's made about Artie Lange in weeks. Many Howard Stern Show fans were still holding out hope that Artie Lange might recover and return to the show, especially after Stern and Sirus XM Vice-President Tim Sabean refuted gossip blogger Perez Hilton's story stating that Lange had been fired.

When Howard Stern regained his composure Tuesday morning, he encouraged "Dina" and other listeners frustrated by the lack of Artie Lange-related content on the Howard Stern Show to change the channel to one of his competitors on XM: "You got Opie and Anthony-go listen to them! They tell everyone they're the greatest!"

Gary 'Baba Booey' Dell'Abate stated later that he had received an update on Artie Lange's status, but that he wouldn't share it on air because it was against the family's wishes.  Baba Booey then stated: "The biggest update is: 'He is doing his very best'."

Howard is hilarious lol that woman was definitely out of line like he said. Any normal person knows that it takes time to get better from the physical wounds, talk less of the emotional wounds Artie has.
Takes time to get over that - we dont need an update~ the show is just great. Miss Artie though and we pray for him to get better.

Artie's a great comedian, but he is the only one who's going to decide whether or not he wants to continue with a seemly great life or not! Sure he went through bad times with his old man being paralyzed, but come on, put that aside already and get on with your life!!

Howard is a heartless user. He used Artie and his addiction for years to prop up the show. The warning signs were there. Artie was doing all the comedic heavy lifting while Howard was sitting back counting his millions and thinking about his Hamptons holidays. Now that Artie is no longer useful, Howard doesn't have the time to update himself or his fans on Artie's well being, but he has time to negotiate his contract ad nauseam on the air. It's a disgrace. And I'm not a hater. I'm actually a Stern Show fan who has really lost respect for Howard on this issue.

Did it ever occur to anyone, that Howard is doing exactly as he needs to. It is Artie's families wish that Artie not be discussed on the show. Howard is doing the right thing. What Artie did is serious stuff and it needs to be handled privately with his family, not in front of millions of listeners. If people are angry at Howard and the show for not talking about it, then you as listeners are selfish and don't understand that Artie needs privacy and to heal. Leave it alone. I want to know about Artie too, but I don't matter. Artie and his family matter. When he is ready we will know how he is. Just hope for him to be ok and stop trying to satisfy your curiosity.

Howard glosses over everyting he does not want peolple to know about (Penny Croan, George Flowers)and leaves his audience in the dark. Yet we hear the same droan everyday about Leno and AI. How is it he knows everything about Ellen and Jay Leno but absolutely nothing about his on-air sidekick of almost nine years. Are you telling me he has not contacted Artie or his family. No one is asking Howard to bash Artie, just let us know what is going on. Here is (5) things you know Howard could answer but refuses to 1- Is Artie in rehab or at home? 2-Has he reached out to Artie in the last month? 3)Is he still on the Sirius payroll or has he been let go? 4- Has Robin or anyone else been in touch? 5- Is he considering replacing Artie before the year is out. Also does anyone remember Howard stating a few years back, if I am going to retire of course I would give my staff members a years notice. I need to feel comfortable that you would all be able to get work. Well you have 10 months??

The whole "we are respecting the family's wishes" sounds like an excuse not to mention Artie. There are ways to talk about a close friend in a tragic sitiuation without revealing personal details about the event. How many times do we see famous people die or get injured and, the very same day, friends and family are on Larry King and elsewhere talking about the fond memories of their loved one? So far there hasn't been much warmth in any of Howard's comments about Artie. It sounds like fake sympathy and a shallow "I wish him well in his life", which is something you say about a stranger not a close friend and employee of 10 years. It also sounds like a kiss off. A talented communicator like Howard Stern could talk about Artie if he wanted. Clearly he doesn't.

Artie needs his own radio show, this is clear. Hey catholics and religious, go away, nature took hold, Artie is a talented man that doesn't need superstition to live. He has problems, but he'll overcome them, and tons of people will listen to him do so!. The Artie Lang show should debut soon!

I agree 100% with what CRYSTAL wrote. I'd like to know what's going on with Artie and it is a little strange that Howard and his peeps haven't said much. BUT, I understand why they wouldn't say much and I'll just wait patiently until statements are made regarding Artie's status in life and on the show. I hope Artie's doing well and wish him and his family the best during what must a VERY scary time in their lives.

The show suffers tremendously without Artie, mainly because unlike Artie, who is a skilled comedic talent, Howard's foil for conversation is now the absolutely worthless and moronic Robin Quivers. At best, she adds no entertainment value to a discussion and, at worst, brings it to a screeching halt with some pointless observation. She sucks and is only still on the show due to Howard's loyalty. Get well Artie, we fans need you!

that rant is EXACTLY why he could never take Simon's job on idol. he has ZERO tolerence for people who dont see things his way. He had a perfect opportunity to have an intelligent conversation with this woman, but he chose to rip her to shreds and throw the C word around over and over. And he wonders why everyone hates him in Hollywood and keeps having the same guests on....

To all those complete idiots whining about Howard not giving updates on Artie. How stupid do you have to be to not realize it's not his story to tell. Arties family does not want it to be discussed. It's out of respect to Artie that he is keeping his mouth shut. God you guys are so f%$#ing retarded it makes me sick. Your probably the same f#$%s that slow down when there is a car accident so you can see some carnage. Shut the f#@k up get a life, and when Artie is ready he'll tell the story himself

The people who think Artie made the show or that Artie is the best part of the show are usually the people who don't "get" the show.

Artie, like eric the midget, is unfunny outside of the Stern show... Howard makes em who they are.

H-ward doesn't owe anyone any Artie updates.

If you are one of those people that thinks Artie makes the show then you truly do not "get" the show. The entire show is HOWARDS WORLD. Hence, The HOWARD STERN Show. Artie is funny, I completely agree. Does he bring a lot to the show, yes but is the show wrecked without him, no. Howard will do what he does best without Artie and that's provide great content, rant, and clue us into what it is like to be him.

Enjoy the time with the show you have without Artie because for those of you who missed the old days this is about as close as you are going to get.

Personally, I think they should have George Takei on more. I think he is funnier and actually adds more to the show than Angry Artie does. Don't get me wrong, I miss the old Artie, but lately Artie has become hostile and obnoxious, without being funny. I wish him all the best, but Howard does not need him right now. We need more Mr. Sulu!!

F**k Artie and F**k Stern....tune over to channel 202 on XM or 197 on Sirius and listen to real entertainment....that's right...Opie and Anthony. Their 3rd mike or resident comedian has taken a knife to his belly, and he's there everyday.
