The Artie Lange New York Post Page Six story posted early Thursday morning exposed a horrific suicide attempt by the deeply loved Howard Stern Show sidekick. 
 
News of Artie Lange's suicide attempt is a shock to Howard Stern Show fans and everyone who loves the comedian and followed his painful struggles with depression and drug abuse since his 2007 on-air announcement that he was a heroin addict.
 
Artie Lange's suicide attempt is far from an anomaly in America.  The American Association of Suicidology's most recent statistics state that more than 33,000 Americans completed suicide in 2006.  Suicide was the 11th leading cause of death in the United States, while homicide was the 15th.  In addition to the astounding number of completed suicides, an estimated 830,000 Americans attempted suicide and survived.

The National Suicide Prevention Center offering help for people contemplating suicide and family members and friends of those concerned about someone who may be suicidal.
 
The Suicide Prevention Lifeline has counselors available to talk to those having suicidal thoughts 24 hours a day.  The National Suicide Prevention Center can be reached at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
