Arrest made over Robert Schimmel's fatal car accident

Police have released more details on the car accident that killed Howard Stern Show regular Robert Schimmel including a statement that the driver of the car Schimmel's daughter swerved to avoid was arrested after fleeing the scene.

Robert Schimmel's daughter Aaliyah Schimmel was reportedly driving a Honda coupe carrying the comedian and his 11-year-old son last Thursday when the SUV driving in front of them crashed into the median. Aaliyah swerved to avoid the wreck and flipped the Schimmel vehicle off the road into a concrete drainage ditch. The driver of the SUV fled the scene of the accident and was later arrested.

Schimmel died Friday night, a week after the accident occurred.

Robert Schimmel was already suffering from serious physical ailments at the time of the crash. Schimmel's liver had been decimated by years of living with Hepatitis C that he contracted from a tainted blood transfusion during his military service. He was in desperate need of a liver transplant at the time of the wreck.

Howard Stern Show co-host Robin Quivers, a former nurse, commented last week that Schimmel's compromised liver would have made his injuries much more complicated to treat.

Robert Schimmel was 60 years old. Aaliyah (19) suffered minor injuries in the accident and her 11-year-old brother was unharmed.
