Summer is definitely the time to travel. The weather is nice and hot in New York. A getaway to a less crowded environment seems like the best gift, even if it's only for the weekend. After realizing that the flight is in six hours and you have an empty suitcase, you start to furiously pack away: the brand new wardrobe, the jewelry, the toiletries. Most of the time the one thing most women forget to fuss with is a proper skincare routine. The great debate on which bikini to bring (just bring both) overshadows the need to bring the proper skincare routine to ensure that you look good from face to toe. Why bother? Because that Brazilian hottie isn't going to check you out if your skin looks like asphalt and feels like grits.
A change of climate is the most common skin irritant, so when traveling outside of your residential city consider the following tips to keep your skin up so it won't drag your vacation down.
For the weekend beach getaway:
- Just like many wise ones that came before: USE SUNSCREEN! If you're afraid of putting heavy duty sunscreen on your face, opt for an oil-free moisturizer with SPF 20+ to avoid clogged pores and possible irritation.
- Laying out to the beach can lead to burned skin and heat stroke, so avoid stationary sunbathing between the hours of 11:00a.m. to 2:00p.m. when the sun is directly overhead. Go grab a drink in the shades and cool off, or maybe get some souvenir shopping done.
- Not only does your body need to stay hydrated in hot weather, your skin does too! Bring along a bottle of water mist like Evian and spray to cool down. For a more budget friendly option, filled an empty spray bottle with cool spring water for the same effect.
- It's never too late to stop the effects of sunburn. To decrease stinging and peeling, apply aloe juice or cooling products like Korres Yogurt Aftersun Gel. These products can be stored in the fridge for extra cooling effect.
To a land far far away with a different climate:
- For a trip to a location with a different climate, bring two sets of skincare, your regular skincare routine and one that is suitable for the vacation spot. For example, if you are heading to a humid location, bring a routine suitable for oily skin, but if you are heading to a dry climate, then bring a hydrating skincare routine.
- Bring small containers filled with skincare products instead of brining a full-size bottle. This allows you to carry more options. To obtain containers and skincare samples, you can visit Sephora or major department stores to request samples, just don't be greedy.
- Bring a small container of cleaning mask and a small container of calming mask. This will ensure no matter what storm hits you, you will be prepared.
While on the plane:
- To ensure that both your body and your skin is comfortable for the plane ride, keep hydrated with decaffeinated drinks and hydrating mist for your face.
- Follow the 100ml rule, and bring small amounts of moisturizer to ensure that your skin isn't tight or cracking.
- Red-eye flights are a nightmare, so bring your contact case already filled with solution so you can rest your eyes.
- Having a fresh face is very important in some occasions, so an hour prior to arrival, apply a fresh face of makeup or touch up on what you already have, just remember to blot the extra oil off before doing so.
Other general tips:
- Less is more- while you're on vacation, treat your skin to a little break too. Apply makeup with a light hand and minimal products for a carefree out-of-bed look. The best way to pack light is to bring a face palette that includes all the essentials you will need to bring your day makeup into night.
- Hydrocortisone is the best ant inflammatory ointment on the market, so having that on hand will prepare you for all the possible 'what ifs' including bug bites and food allergy rashes.
- The most important thing is to bring a bottle of lotion. Even crossing state line can mean a change of water texture, and to keeping your skin moisturized is essential in completely the perfect holiday look.
Going on a holiday is fun, but being prepared is the best part of the process. Leave plenty of time to pack, and make a packing list to ensure that you have all your goodies on the go. Have a great vacation!
