Someone wise once said, “When life gives you a lemon, squirt it in your enemy’s eyes”. This is great advice, but why waste a perfectly good lemon on someone you hate? Did you know that lemons contain nutrients that are great for your body and your skin? So take out those lemons you’ve been saving for that salsa, and let’s detox!
The most simple and best way to utilize lemons is by making lemon water, because like all fruits and veggies, the nutritional content decreases when it’s cooked.
- Start by cleaning your organic lemon under cold water, and wipe dry with a paper towel. Using organic is important, because the pesticides will remain on the peel of the lemon, which will ultimately dissolve into the water throughout the day.
- Thinly slice two pieces of lemon, and place it in a glass. Keep the rest of the lemon in a closed container. This will prevent the lemon from dehydrating, and keep the lemon fresh for the rest of the week. Do not slice up the whole lemon for convenience; the vitamin C will evaporate over time. Keep the slices thin to prevent your drink from being overly sour.
- Keep the lemon in your glass throughout the day and refill with cold water for a refreshing drink. Replace the lemon slices every morning, and repeat this until the lemon is completely consumed.
Hint: Save the tips of the lemon and place in the refrigerator for a natural deodorizer. The lemon will soak up any strong remaining odor in the fridge, so it is important to keep a cut lemon in a closed container.
The benefits of lemon:
- Detoxification: Lemon juice produces a diuretic effect. A simple way of describing this process is that lemon water will make you urinate more often. The acidic properties of lemon will keep your urinary system in healthy condition, so this is recommended especially for those who are prone to urinary track infections.
- Digestives: Lemon tea is a well known coffee substitute throughout England. The reason behind that is because lemon and black tea promotes digestion. For those overly filling lunches and family gatherings, try a cup of hot lemon black tea with sugar in place of coffee to prevent heartburn.
- Increase immunity: As we all know, vitamin C keeps your immune system strong. For those who are sensitive to seasonal flu and allergies, this is an especially great way to consume vitamin C without taking the additives in supplements.
- Increase water intake: A few drops of lemon juice can flavor a tall glass of water throughout the day, and continuous use would decrease the urge to consume soft drinks and sugar-saturated juice mixes. This greatly helps decrease the daily calorie and sugar intake.
- Anti-aging: Antioxidants are a known ingredient for anti-aging, and it is most effective when consumed on a regular basis. Lemons are a natural source of antioxidants, which helps get rid of free-radicals, a major cause of premature aging.
Results: Nothing speaks better than actual results from this experiment. After a week of consuming lemon water, there was an obvious improvement on skin texture. The sebum secretion is more even and less intense, and the skin became less inflamed and slightly brighter. In addition, the body feels cleaner due to a more regular “detoxing schedule”. The first two days were slightly harder due to the change of habit, but the mildly sour taste quickly became the taste of choice over regular tap water. This simple added step in your daily routine will improve your health and your skin, so why not give it a try?
