Will Chris Brown be a factor in the Texans backfield in 2009? (Houston Chronicle photo)
After writing a few roster reviews and saying things like Chris Brown is an injury settlement away from retirement, imagine my excitement when I read Nick Scurfield's report on houstontexans.com today about Brown being healthy and ready to compete.
To be honest, I had no clue what Brown's status was since he was placed on IR last August, so in this case any news is welcome news.
Brown suffered a herniated disk in his back during preseason last year and it cost him the season. According to Scurfield's report, Brown was recently cleared by doctors to resume physical activities.
I wonder about the recurrence of such an injury for someone with the occupation of NFL running back. If there are any back specialists out there, I'd like to hear from you..
Considering Brown's injury history throughout his career, color me sceptical about Brown's chances to contribute in 2009.
Brown hasn't had a 'good' year statistically since 2005 and considering the Texans recent courtship of Ced Benson, I'm thinking they're not all that confident about him either, despite today's upbeat report.
But if Brown can return and contribute, that's a good thing.
No, check that. Considering the Texans running back situation that would be a great thing.
Even if Brown could give the Texans what he gave the Titans in 2007 (102 carries for 462 yards and 5 TDs) it would be fantastic, and exactly what the Texans would need to keep some hits off Steve Slaton.
Here's hoping that Brown can deliver this season. It would be a pleasant surprise.

Agree 100%. Expect nothing, and if we get anything it's pure lagniappe. The bad thing is that due to his recent history, he can NOT be counted on for anything. That means we have to plan as if he is not going to be on the team, so it has zero positive impact on our roster shaping for the coming season.
I don't think Chris Brown ever recoverd from the hit he took from Jason Simmons. He has never returned to be the runningback he was before that hit and I doubt he ever will. That is the style of defence I am waiting to see on a consistant basis from the Texans.
