Roster moves aplenty for Texans

Tuesdays are days off for NFL players during the regular season but it's also the day when teams bring in players for workouts and make weekly roster transactions to compensate for injuries suffered during the previous week.

The Texans were busy today, according to reports on houstontexans.com and myfoxhouston.com.

Here's a summary of the transactions:

  • Placed backup linebacker Khary Campbell on injured reserve.  Texans head coach Gary Kubiak talked about the injuries to Campbell and Nick Ferguson during his Monday presser.
  • Promoted DE/special teamer Tim Jamison from the practice squad to the 53 man roster to replace Campbell.  Jamison's role will be to help Joe Marciano on special teams.  Jamison has been with the team since April.
  • Released LS Clark Harris from the practice squad.  Harris was with the Texans at the end of the '08 season and was recently re-signed to the practice squad as insurance in case Joel Dreessen's hip injury prevented him from participating in game action.
  • According to Mark Berman, the Texans also plan to add former Titans RB Chris Henry and former Seahawks LB Thomas Williams to the practice squad, filling spots vacated by Jamison and Harris.  *UPDATE: Berman has updated his article and is now reporting that LB Buster Davis, not Williams, will be signed to the practice squad.  Davis was with the Texans during camp and preseason and was placed on the practice squad during final roster cutdowns.  He was recently released from the practice squad (September 15).
  • Henry is the most intriguing of the prospects.  He's a big body that would be an ideal complement to Steve Slaton, however, the former second round pick of the Titans never fulfilled expectations.

Henry was active for only one game in 2008 and was suspended for four games at the end of his rookie season in 2007 for violations of the NFL substance abuse policy.  His fate was sealed with the Titans in April when the team drafted Javon Ringer in the 3rd round.

Whether Alex Gibbs' zone schemes can rescue Henry's career remains to be seen but it's noteworthy that the Texans now have two RBs on the practice squad (Arian Foster being the other) as their running game has struggled in the first quarter of the regular season.

Henry's bio from NFLPA:

2008: Primarily a backup running back that saw only one game of action at Indianapolis (12/28).

2007: Saw action as a reserve in seven games and carried the ball 31 times for 119 yards and two touchdowns … Grabbed six receptions for 53 yards out of the backfield and returned 13 kickoffs for 272 yards (20.9 avg.) … Played in his first career NFL contest and scored his first career NFL touchdown on a four-yard run against Houston (10/21).

*Williams, a smallish LB and former teammate of Brian Cushing at USC, was a 5th round pick of the Jaguars in 2008.  He spent the '08 season at Jacksonville and was released in final roster cutdowns in September '09.  Williams spent the past month on the Seahawks practice squad.

I know this posting is alittle late being as it's been a while since they've added Henry. I was wondering if you thought the Texans will ever add Henry to the 53 man roster. Obviously he has to learn the offense, but he has size, speed that the Texans could use at the RB position.

@IRivera, I don't know how he's doing or if he has a shot at cracking the 53. I asked ESPN South writer Paul Kuharsky about him since he is based in Nashville and covered the Titans for 10 years and he wasn't impressed. But you never know how a RB will react to a new system (the TExans run a lot more zone than the Titans) when he is faced with a career crossroads situaton.
