Ray Wright puts his stamp on Texans strength and conditioning program

The Texans began their voluntary off-season workout and conditioning program today at Reliant Park.

Brooke Bentley of houstontexans.com wrote a good report on the first day, getting player reaction to the changes they are seeing in the strength and conditioning (S&C) program now under the leadership of Ray Wright..

Wright was named S&C coach after Dan Riley was fired in January.  Wright was Riley's assistant for the past seven seasons.

What wasn't entirely clear on January 7 - the day after Riley's release - has become much clearer on April 7.

I wrote this reaction to the Riley firing in January, and it's interesting to go back now and read it again in the context of what the players said today and over the past few weeks about Wright's philosophy - a philosophy which appears to be fundamentally different from Riley's.

To summarize the S&C program changes Bentley has shared in this and in previous articles, over the next six weeks Texans players will experience:

  • A focus on muscle isolation instead of just gaining strength to stay healthy
  • A concept called muscle confusion
  • A re-designed weight room with more free weight stations and fewer machines
  • A focus on football movements
  • Yoga and Jiu Jitsu classes to increase flexibility
  • A change in warm up routines

The net effect of these changes may not be known for months.  Obviously not every injury can be prevented, but Wright and his players appear to be optimistic and excited about the changes.
