With the upcoming FIFA Soccer World Cup 2010 tournament in South Africa in June and July, there will be plenty of travelers in Vancouver, BC keen to catch the matches, no matter what time of day or night. Locals who are bitter about their Vancouver Canucks exiting the playoffs in game 6 against the Chicago Blackhawks again this year might even convert some hockey fans into soccer fans. Or is it football?
FIFA World Cup at the Red Card Sports Bar
From June 11 – July 11, 2010, Red Card Sports Bar will be rocking with dedicated soccer fans. And they’re in luck, too. 18 HD plasma TVs, ranging from 42”-60” take up wall space from every angle in this new European sports bar. Sit at the bar, upstairs, along the back wall or in the cozy, high-backed booths and you’ll still have a perfect view of the action.
Italian-Inspired Food, Pizza and Lots o’ Beer
If you didn’t know that the Red Card Sports Bar had a rough start with their menu, you’d never guess it. Since Executive Chef Andreas Wechselberger has taken over, the “Italian-inspired comfort food” self-label blends pub food like Grilled Wings ($9) and Burgers ($15) with Italian staples like Paninis ($13-14), stomach warming Pastas ($14-$16) and Pizzas ($13-$17), oh the pizzas.
Cooked in a “Marana Forni” wood-burning oven, the bricks of which protrude from the open kitchen to add a certain down home feel to the slick bar, the pizza produced has a pretty fantastic taste. Take out pizza is available until 1:00 am every night of the week except Sundays (until 12:00 am). Also make sure to ask if the $15 pizza and beer special is still running when you go- it doesn’t get much better than that.
Speaking of beer, there’s a large draft list on tap, as well as a long list of bottled beers from all over the world (over 40 selections). Then there are the reds, whites and surprisingly robust catalogue of cocktails.
Moda Hotel Vancouver
Red Card Sports Bar is housed inside the historic Moda Hotel. The funky rooms offer an update on the 1908 building with splashes of red, contemporary furniture and luxurious washroom amenities. In other words, watch the game downstairs, then head up to the vintage-contemporary rooms to sleep off the excitement in style.
