The Summer Night Market in Richmond, BC is filled with Asian food,
entertainment and family-friendly fun. Photo by L Henry.
Western Canada is like the entrance hall to the house of Asian culture in North America. There is no other city outside of Asia as saturated with Asian restaurants and culture as Richmond, BC is.
Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night during the summer months, the popular summer night market (previously called and still referred to as the Richmond Night Market) is a fantastic way to spend an evening outdoors. For $5 CDN for parking, a whole family can go out for under $30.

Asian Food
Make sure to arrive hungry. Stalls with bright lights and intriguing smells can be sensory overload for kids. Hurricane potatoes (the vegetable expertly spiralled around a stick), dumplings galore, fried octopus tentacles and heaps of chow mein beckon for a taste. Don’t worry, though: if the kids think it’s all too exotic, there are choices like cotton candy, too!
Asian food isn’t the only highlight of the summer night market. Retail stalls sell everything from panties to Blackberry accessories; for extra fun, head to the fortune teller and the waveboard practice station.
INSIDER’S TIP: Check the night market’s website for the nightly entertainment schedule. Hilarious events like the weekly eating competition, karaoke contest and bands singing the oldies take to the stage for family-friendly amusement and lots of prizes.

This looks wonderful, food and entertainment all in one.
Oh, this is a wonderful night out! I had so much fun hanging out on my first night and tried lots of different types of food. That's what I liked the best: you can just go from stall to stall and try out so many different kinds of food, most ringing in at under $5. Yum...
