When I travel internationally, I guard my cash, credit cards and passport at all times. I have seen and heard of every possible pick pocket scam that exists out there. In South America, the old mustard trick is still going strong. And in Europe, I recently read travel guru Rick Steves’ article on the latest pick pocket scam: women stripping to distract unsuspecting people. I must admit, pick pockets are devising new and creative stunts that really, really work.
Pick pockets are everywhere in Europe and South America. It’s expected, and as a tourist, being on guard is paramount. Money and credit cards should be concealed, but accessible. I just discovered an absolute must-have and problem-solving travel accessory; the PortaPocket is what every business and leisure traveler should have to prevent a potential pick pocket problem.
The PortaPocket is a neoprene band and detachable pocket; it’s perfect for carrying cash, credit cards and other valuables in the traveling mode. It’s designed to wear on the calf, thigh, ankle, arm or waist. Conceal it under clothes and you won’t be a pick pocket’s target. When shopping or eating out, the detachable pocket makes it easy to access money. A selection of interchangeable pockets fits items of various sizes: insulin pumps, inhalers, iPods, small cameras, lipstick and passports.
While traipsing about, the PortaPocket serves as a security system; its purpose is not to replace your purse or backpack, it’s to secure what you need most in a foreign place. It’s such an easy and inexpensive way to prevent being a victim.
PortaPocket kits retail at $25 and are available everywhere. For online purchasing, items range from $11 to $26. www.portapocket.com

good stuff..I've had my pocket picked in a dance crowd in Nicaragua and the last time in front of the main church in Antigua(where I hang my panama)...I'm the Ex's central-america-travel go-fer..as long as one can avoid full-body contact, front and rear, you're probably cool. M
Pickpockets really do have some interesting new ways of stealing your money - one of the ones I found fascinating was to have someone mark your back or shoulder with chalk after you leave an ATM machine so their partner knows you've got cash in your pocket. Good idea about the portable pocket!
