The chain of Boston Blackie’s restaurants may be famous for their thick and juicy burgers, but they’ve got some encased meats on the menu, too. Before you snap into this dog, don’t let the name of the restaurant fool you. The dog may be charred over a grill, but it’s crispy and snappy without being overdone.
The dog comes at a hefty price for a dog - $7.99 at the Financial District location - but you’ll get a hefty piece of meat, too. Clocking in just under a half-pound, the Vienna Beef dog entree is sliced down the middle and served open-faced. In other words, if you try to eat this like a regular dog, the bun folded in, you’re sure to get messy.
The jumbo dog can be topped with onions and a traditional neon-green relish. Patrons can get additional toppings as well: cheese and/or chili for an extra .99 cents each. The menu claims the cheese can be stuffed into the dog, but don’t be fooled; the cheese will smother the top of the dog, sealing the Vienna dog onto the bun.
This supremely juicy dog is served with a side of coleslaw and no more. Fries can be ordered as a separate side, but since they’re ‘family-style,’ be prepared for a big basket to share.
The jumbo dog isn’t the only doggie on the menu. Part of the ‘plates to share’ menu includes hot dog bites, which is just the jumbo dog sliced into more manageable chunks and a side of Carson’s BBQ sauce for $5.99.
Boston Blackies has three locations in Chicago and five in the suburbs.
