Area hospices have been using Morphine Sulfate oral solution/ Roxonal for pain management for quite some time now. Tuesday's(January 26, 2010) FDA approval made its use truly official. This approval is a part of the FDA's unapproved drug initiative where the approval ensures that this drug is readily available and that the prescribers comply with the law. The deputy director for the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research is quoted in the press release stating, "An important goal of the unapproved drugs initiative is to make sure that marketed drugs meet current FDA standards," and that, "Our action today reflects a careful balance between ensuring patient access to necessary medicines, while making sure companies comply with the law."
Having pain medications like Morphine Sulfate oral solution readily available to those in need is a tremendous plus. It will save families from having to go all across the city to have access to necessary medications. Pain and symptom management is a major goal of hospice care and with the help of these drugs; no one has to have a painful death.

Interesting article. Does that mean the use was illegal before FDA approval or was it legal but a "use at your own risk" kinda thing? Thanks for the information!
