The Humane Society of the United States has designated today the "National call in day for horses" in order to push their support of H.R. 503/S. 727 - the Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act of 2009.
This bill would outlaw the slaughter of American horses for human consumption, as well as the transportation of horses across the borders into Canada or Mexico for the purposes of getting those horses to slaughterhouses (since currently there are no operational U.S. slaughterhouses which handle equids).
Regardless of your stance on this issue, I would urge you to contact your U.S. Representatives and Senators. As is always the case, our legislators cannot properly represent us if they are unaware of the views of their constituents. Unfortunately, it is rare that they will seek out our views, so it is incumbent upon us to contact them and express those views.
The HSUS website has a quick link to see where your representatives currently stand on these bills. After checking, there will be contact information allowing you to contact your specific representatives. Please be sure to be polite and professional when contacting your legislators, and bear in mind our common goal of better quality of life for all American equids.
