Salmonella is a common germ found in horse stables. Even so, a horse normally becomes infected from direct contact with contaminated animals, hay, feed, water and/or manure.
Symptoms a horse with Salmonella poisoning will exhibit include:
• Colic
• Diarrhea
• Depression
• Lack of appetite
• Raise in temperature
*Not all symptoms may be present
Humans can contract Salmonella poisoning from handling an infected horse. Measures must be taken to disinfect items that are contaminated from coming into contact with a sick horse. All pets must be kept away from the horse’s area.
If you believe your horse has contracted Salmonella, contact your equine veterinarian as soon as possible.
