New Moon is officially the most successful midnight release ever. Early numbers put the film’s opening night at more than $72,000,000, which translates to just under $20,000 for every theater that was showing the movie. It may not seem that staggering at first, but when you consider that the numbers are from one day, and Saturday was predicted to be the big money day, it’s unbelievable. Despite early reviews that said the film was drawn out and slow paced, advance tickets were bought up as quickly as they became available. I can guarantee that the area ticket scalpers cashed in on this New Moon madness as well, desperate fans have paid a heavy price for less. Personally, I don’t understand the hype. Even fans of the books who lined up days early to see Twilight admitted to being disappointed by the film. Yet, those same people camped out again for New Moon and were anticipating a different result.
Even the critics that were willing to give the movie a chance were disappointed by it. Rotten Tomatoes gave it 4.9 out of 10 and one review summed up the entire film in just a couple of sentences:
“If you haven't seen it yet, I suggest you don't, and continue to mock the twihard fans.
Wow... The movie is about Bella being depressed, and two monsters saying how bad they want her but can't have her. The film drags on, and on... basically no action. If you've seen the previews, and behind the scenes, you've already seen the nest parts! Even Dakota Fanning was in it for like 3 minutes!!! Such a let down!!!”
The reviews are coming in on both sides, but a lot of people were disappointed by the movie. I’ll do the right thing and avoid it all together, I could go see A Christmas Carol or 2012 and be perfectly happy with what I saw. I’ve been trying to tell you all how terrible this film was going to be, but everyone has to find out for themselves. If the trailer truly did show everything good about the movie, it’s in some trouble. The trailer alone is what turned off a lot of critics to begin with.
My DVD recommendation for today was recommended to me by Mr. Stephen Ruby, Near Dark (1987). A mid-western farm boy reluctantly becomes a member of the undead when a girl he meets turns out to be part of a band of southern vampires who roam the highways in stolen cars. Part of his initiation includes a bloody assault on a hick bar. This is another one of those great 80's horror movies that will help you forget this Twilight nonsense. Enjoy.

I loved the movie. As has everyone I've spoken to about it. Don't dish out advice about something you know nothing about especially when you have an acutely biased opinion.
OK...I admit to being a great fan of the Twilight books and I am a 34 year old very successful executive, happily married with children, not a tween. I was very disappointed in the first movie and had high hopes for this one. To be honest I was not disappointed. It was exactly like the book. I was so pleased that it stayed true to SM's concept instead of selling out and adding action that doesn't take place in the books. Bella IS depressed in the book and it IS drawn out. Maybe the non-book readers and non SM fans didn't like it but every person I have spoken with who loved the book, loved the movie. I thought it was GREAT! I saw it twice this weekend.
I also saw the "New Moon" this weekend, I didn't like it very much, but it was better than "Twilight."
Laine, everyone's opinion is biased, some like the movies and others don't. I liked them, they're not especially great movies, but they're okay. He doesn't and he's entitled to his opinion just as much as you are. As a former journalist I know how much information he has to go with, I know several fans of the books that didn't like the movies.
The book is better than the movie, as Mr. Tellock pointed out in his previous 'New Moon' article, its a romantic tragedy before a vampire movie. I liked it, but I am also biased.
I really liked the movie. I haven't gotten a chance to read any of the books yet but I would love to just to see how the books are in comparison to the movies. The people I have spoken to that have watched the movie this weekend have all liked or LOVED the movie. It's kind of funny because I got my boyfriend into it. He said, "I think I better watch the first movie before we go and watch the next one so I'm not lost." He liked them both and I was surprised. Now both of us want to read the books and watch the next movie together. The twilight movies are enjoyable because it's not just about gore with werewolves and vampires at war with each other. It has the twist of having a love story in the mix. I personally can't wait for the next one to come out!
Read all the books, a great and interesting story line, loved the movie, the critics need to get a life, who cares what their cynical view is anyway. They are so jaded they can't be objective and recognize a good story with conflict and a great message. The young actors did well, I was impressed with Taylor Lautner's acting in parts (like the rainy scene with Bella) special effects were awesome. Looking forward to Eclipse ;-) Not your typical fan, I'm a 52 year old male. So there!
Well, I just started reading the books and haven't gotten to the last 2. I watched the first movie and needless to say was very dissappointed in it. The first book was WAAAYYY better. As for the 2nd one, 200% better and it stayed true to the book as opposed to the first one. Most books are always better than their movie counterparts so as long as you remember that you can judge the movie as a movie and not constantly look for it to be better. Usually not going to happen. With that being said, I don't know who this reviewer was talking to but I would venture to say they were probably people who weren't on the bandwagon anyway. The people I went with (about 17 from work)were more than happy with the result. And I am talking about all of them. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure they're out there, but it isn't as many as your insinuating.
I LOVED the movie! I will be going to see it again! I am 32 and I went on Friday night with two 10 year olds and an 11 year old. I have to say that the only thing that I did not like were all the tweens screaming every time one of the characters took off their shirt. I believe that the book and the movie were very close. As someone else posted Bella was depressed, painfully depressed. I could feel her pain in the movie. I am very pleased and can not wait to see what is in store for us with Eclipse!
1. When Edward leaves, Bella attempts to commit suicide. (Great message to send to young girls!!)
2. The books arent well written, just because every other word is a fancy adjective doesnt make it good writing.
3. All the rules Meyer sets for being a vampire are broken by the end of the series.
Not only that, she breaks rules set by more esteemed authors.
4. Bella almost dies fifty thousand times, but Edward always saves her. This is boring.
5. The reason the books became so popular is because Bella has no personality and any lonely little girl (or adult apparently) can put themselves in her shoes.
6. Bella teaches women to let the man handle everything, which pretty much is a huge step backward for women everywhere, who have fought for equality.
7. Edward is extremely possessive, border-line abusive, and boring as anything. (Lets teach our daughters that this is how to be treated and our sons that this is how to treat. *rolls eyes*)
8. Read Anne Ri
8. Read Anne Rice those are vampires, not the girly men that Meyer has created.
9. You dont have to describe the character every two pages, we know all about Edwards perfectly toned chest the fourth time she mentions it.
10. Its predictable, and childish.
11. She uses a drug reference in a book written for ten-year-olds. Nice.
12. Fangirls are so blinded by their love for Edward that they dont realize the book is terrible.
13. If the first 200 pages of your book rely on the mystery of a characters identity, dont slap First, Edward was a vampire on the back cover.
14. She had only been in Forks for a month when Edward had been watching her sleep for two months??
15. The reason Edward cant read Bellas mind is because she doesnt have one.
16. Not worth the paper on which it was printed.
17. Bella has no goals and no future, her life revolves around Edward.
18. A hundred years difference = pedophile.
19. Its a co-dependent relatio
19. Its a co-dependent relationship stripped down to the bare essentials. Girl: I cant live without you. I want to change myself to be with you. Boy: If you leave me, I will kill myself.
20. Its offensive to the entire human race, both male and female.
21. Grown women act like they are cats in heat over a teen boy... really? If a man were to act like this over a teen female actor he would be torn to shreds and labeled a sex offender by anyone he told. Double standard much?
Befoere anbyone askes, Yes I did read the series and saw the first movie. I read them because my teen daughter was reading them and I wanted to be informed on the books so I could work damage control with the lessons that this "author" (if you can call her that) was putting into her head. I was not going to tell her she could not read them because as we all know teens will do the opposite anyway. My duty was to make sure that the messages were not being taken to heart.
Well see here, don't just be leaving a comment saying "HEY! Shut up! I'm a big twilight fan!" blah, blah, blah. No one cares if your one of the biggest Twi-dorks around. But anyway, I agree with anything my brother Aaron here has to say and I also agree with Julie on EVERY single number she has on her 3...very...long comments. Not trying to be offensive but Aaron has any right on his opinions he types because that's EXACTLY what he's supposed to be doing. THAT IS HIS JOB!
