Alice in Wonderland as only Tim Burton could tell it

Alice in Wonderland was a story that was seemingly written for the likes of Tim Burton, with characters like the Mad Hatter and the Cheshire Cat, fans have just been wading through the rumors waiting for the day that it would be confirmed. Tim Burton is the genius behind such classic films as Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and The Corpse Bride. With that kind of dark creativity and the story behind Alice in Wonderland this film can’t possibly fail.

Alice, 17, attends a party at a Victorian estate only to find she is about to be proposed to in front of hundreds of snooty society types. Off she runs, following a white rabbit into a hole and ending up in Wonderland, a place she visited 10 years before yet doesn't remember. Alice is being played by Mia Wasikowska and the role of The Mad Hatter will played by Burton’s long time friend, Johnny Depp. Of course Burton has put his own dark spin on the classic story including a moat filled with bloody heads in reference to the Queen of Hearts “off with their heads” line.

The story that started it all was written and printed in 1865 by Lewis Carroll (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson), after a story that he had told a little girl that she enjoyed so much that she asked him to write it down for her. From that story sprouted Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There, the sequel to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. However Burton’s film will be a completely new spin on the story as Alice has now aged to 17 and she is returning to the fantasy land as opposed to her going for the first time.

Having greatly appreciated Tim Burton’s work as a writer and director since I first watched the dark spin on a classic comic book hero in Batman Returns, I am certainly looking forward to seeing his uniquely dark of one of my favorite childhood stories. Although the Alice in Wonderland movie won’t hit theaters until March 5, 2010, I know we’ve been waiting for a project like this for some time now.

To get a good feel for the style of Tim Burton my DVD recommendation for today is the Burton classic, Beetlejuice. A couple (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis) of recently deceased ghosts contract the services of a "bio-exorcist" (Michael Keaton) in order to remove the obnoxious new owners of their house. Enjoy.
