THE WALKING DEAD
There have been a series of rumors running around for the past several months about a possible TV series based on the Robert Kirkman comic series THE WALKING DEAD. The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption) has sealed the deal with AMC to create a pilot episode of the zombie comic.
In a statement, AMC’s Charlie Collier said, “Working with people like Frank Darabont and Gale Anne Hurd is the right way in for us to deliver a project of distinction in this genre.” This is good news, as it means they are tacking the project seriously.
THE WALKING DEAD was first created in 2003 by writer Robert Kirkman and artist Tony Moore. The series centers on Rick Grimes, a small town cop who wakes up from a coma in the midst of the zombie apocalypse. Grimes, his wife, and a few other survivors try to find a safe home. Of course, wackiness ensues as people slowly succumb to the pressure of the situation and loose grip on reality.
This announcement comes only a few short weeks after a rumor surfaced that MTV has plans for a series based on George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead. Though many are hoping for the MTV rumor to be nothing more than speculation, the news that AMC is taking The Walking Dead seriously is definitely a step in the right direction for the genre’s inevitable invasion onto TV.
