Deadline.com's Mike Fleming reported yesterday, July 28, that director Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy) will team up with James Cameron (Avatar, The Terminator) to direct a 3D adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness. Del Toro will direct and Cameron will serve as producer.
According to Fleming, "Mountains was first set up at DreamWorks in 2004 by del Toro and Real Steel producers Montford and Murphy. del Toro and Matthew Robbins wrote the script, which they are now retooling. The package was acquired by Universal when del Toro made a big overall deal there in 2007, when Universal green lit del Toro's Hellboy 2 and hoped to establish him as a cornerstone filmmaker. Those plans were put on hold when del Toro surprised the studio and accepted the offer to co-write and direct two installments of JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit." Fleming also mentions that when he initially spoke with del Toro at Comic-Con the director was "non-committal" about the prospect of the Mountains project.
There has been a lot of talk about del Toro in the past few months. In May, del Toro officially pulled out of directing the film version of The Hobbit, citing scheduling conflicts. News of this partnership comes on the heels of del Toro's Comic-Con announcement of plans to direct a film version of the Disney ride, The Haunted Mansion. del Toro is also working on adaptations of Frankenstein and Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse 5. Del Toro was at Comic-Con promoting his project Afraid of the Dark.
Hopefully Cameron will only be involved on the 3D end of the production and leave the directing in del Toro's very capable hands.
