Possible 'Teen Wolf' TV series, plus 'The Wolf Man' trailer

Over the past couple years, the Twilight franchise has drunk deep from the veins of youth pop culture with author Stephanie Meyer pulling in over $50 million a year from the novels alone and the first film’s worldwide box office well above $350 billion. Considering these numbers, it’s no surprise that other supernatural teen dramas are popping up left and right. Several months ago we heard about Kevin Williamson’s new vamp teen drama The Vampire Diaries, which may or may not delay his work on the new Scream film.

Now, it seems that MTV has also heard the beckoning whistle of the gravy train as The Hollywood Reporter tells us they’re going to be producing a pilot for a new show based on the 1985 film Teen Wolf starring Michael J. Fox. The original film was an allegory for puberty and sexual maturity (hair in new places, coming to terms with the person you’ve become), but it was done with such a fun 1980s teen movie flair that it remains a classic. Its success was followed by a sequel, Teen Wolf Too, and a spinoff Saturday morning cartoon series, neither of which was very good.

Now just because MTV has decided to film the pilot doesn’t mean the show will make it to the airwaves, so it’s still too soon to say whether or not we’ll be seeing Teen Wolf between reruns of I Love the 80s and Flavor of Love Season 11. But, if nothing else, it says a lot that this long-gestating project has even come this far.

And while we’re on the subject of werewolves, we have a nice little segue into the new trailer for Universal’s remake of The Wolf Man. A few weeks ago we heard that the release date for this film had been pushed back from November to February 12th, probably due to the reshoots and heavy special effects revisions we heard about a few weeks before that.

Now this is pretty early to see a trailer for a film that won’t be coming out for another six months, so hopefully that’s a sign that these revisions weren’t as severe as we had feared. Universal took advantage of this past weekend’s heavy horror turnout (read reviews of Halloween 2 and The Final Destination) to debut the trailer in theaters, and hopefully this means that we’ll be getting even more promo material as the release date draws closer. For now though, have a look at the trailer and comment below what you think of the effects.

It has been brought to my attention that I Love the 80s and Flavor of Love are both on VH1. Listen, I'll keep watching old Bela Lugosi movies and we can let the rest of the world worry about reality TV.
