Yet another classic television show is getting a remake to the big screen, as Tim Burton prepares for his next project, Dark Shadows.
The show was originally a daytime soap opera on ABC back in the 1960's, with supernatural elements to it, including vampires. NBC tried to revive it in 1991 as a weekly prime-time series, but failed. The film version will see Burton team up again with his go-to actor, Johnny Depp, who will star as vamp Barnabis Collins, the role originally played by Jonathan Frid. No word yet on who will star as Angelique, the role made famous by Lara Parker.
Producer Graham King told Sci-Fi Wire that, "We're actually going to shoot that film next September/October with Tim Burton and Johnny."
While Burton is still finishing post-production on Alice in Wonderland which releases March 2010 and also stars Johnny Depp, a first draft script for Dark Shadows is already complete. King went on to say, "We've been working on the script a lot, even though he's working on Alice. We've been given a script. John August (GO, Corpse Bride, Charlie & The Chocolate Factory) wrote the first screenplay. We're making some changes, but the film's going to be in production, as I say, September or October of next year."
With the early buzz surrounding Burton's Alice in Wonderland, one can bet that the remake of Dark Shadows to the big screen is sure to be tailored to the directors unique style, and will have none of the emo-elements that seem to be all the rage these days thanks to the popularity of Twilight.

I am looking forward to this so much. I absolutely love Dark Shadows and know that Burton's vision will bring it to life beautifully.
This could be very cool, a good, dark movie is just what we need.
I used to run home from first grade so I would only miss the first 10 minutes or so of this in 1968 (started watching it when they first added Barnabas, I believe in '67). Although Depp is not born to the role the way he was for the star-crossed Speed Racer part, he still has the requisite... darkness. Too bad we'll have to wait until probably Christmas 2012 to see the final product.
I have loved Dark Shadows since the 60's and used to make my mother watch it until we got home from school. She'd fill us in on what had happened while we were gone. My own personal DVR lol. I can hardly wait! Tim Burton will make it dark and wonderful!!!!!
