It has been announced that Magnet Releasing, a division of Magnolia Pictures, has acquired the United States film rights to the latest George Romero zombie film, Survival of the Dead.

Survival received great reviews this fall at the Venice and Toronto film festivals, and now the Pittsburgh native is bringing his beloved zombie series back home. Romero, the director of classics like Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead, is responsible for the modern zombie movement. The latest in saga is a mix of visceral zombie action, social commentary and a return to black humor, something that was prominent in Dawn of the Dead. It is the sixth film in the legendary zombie series.

Like all of Romero's films, this one takes place in a world where the dead walk the earth, in search of living human flesh. Set on Plum Island, Survival follows two families who have managed to maintain some order in the wake of a zombie outbreak. When the inhabitants of the island begin to die off though, the families become divided, as the O'Flynns believe the dead must be destroyed, while the Muldoons believe that the remnants of loved ones must be kept alive until a cure is found. The result is a classic western showdown that results in lots and lots of gore.

“George A. Romero is an undisputed cinematic legend, and we’re honored to be bringing another installment of this incredible series of films to horror fans,” said Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles. “SURVIVAL is smart, extremely fun and a worthy addition to the ‘Of the Dead’ franchise.”

Magnet will be revealing the film as part of its Ultra VOD (video on demand) program this spring, debuting it on VOD platforms across the country, about a month before the films theatrical release.

With the anticipation building as the film continues to garner praise, look for Survival of the Dead to be a hit at the box office in 2010.

Awesome. This is the first I've heard of this. If it's as good as Diary of the Dead, I'll be happy.

I am so excited about this. I love Romero's work and can't wait to see Survival of the Dead.
