2009 SLC Zombie Walk recap

What a sight it was to see hundreds of zombies gathering across the street from Rice-Eccles Stadium at the entrance to Mt. Olivet Cemetery. For those of us that knew what was going on, we were able to enjoy looking at the puzzled expressions on the passing motorists and pedestrian’s faces.

The zombies started gathering at 7:00 pm. By 7:30 pm, hundreds of the undead had gathered to begin their journey. There were many different zombie types. There were zombies that had recently died. There were zombies that, by the looks of them, had been dead for months. There was zombie families, zombie babies, zombie grandparents, there were even zombie celebrities. There were humans who seemed to be out walking their zombie pets. Some of the zombies even decided to bring a snack with them for the long walk.

About 30-45 minutes after the walk began, the first sign of zombies started seen coming down 600 south. Even though this was not a race, it was interesting to note that Zombie Captain Kirk was the first zombie to reach Trolley Square and the end of the route… might be something to do with being used to travelling at warp speed.

Little did the group of zombies know that a big surprise was waiting for them at their destination. An anti-zombie task force was laying in wait to rid SLC from the undead with water balloons and super-soakers.

All in all, the event was a success and without incident, unless you count the police showing up before the walk started to make sure that the zombies were standing safely on the sidewalk instead of on the street. The spectators were having a great time watching the group, and if you really looked closely, it almost looked like the zombies were enjoying themselves. That’s assuming that the undead still have the capacity to enjoy themselves.

Whether or not you missed this year’s event, make sure to check in at the official MySpace page. Images and video will be available soon.  However, the pictures that I was able to take are available here.
