There are tons of books in publication on the topic of homeschooling. Some of them are so full of timeless information that you always keep them on your bookshelf. Others...well, they seem to be out of date pretty quick. But what if you are looking for up-to-date information and either can't find a book at the library on the topic that you are looking for or are tired of searching the internet for relevant content?
Believe it or not, there are actually quite a few magazines in print that deal with the topic of homeschooling! Who knew? Most of these are subscription based so you can have them delivered right to your door or e-mail inbox.
As we discussed in an earlier article, the Greenhouse Report is a bi-monthly newsletter that is put out by the NCHE if you are a member. The great thing about this magazine is that it specifically talks about topics that are geared to you - the North Carolina homeschooler.
The Old Schoolhouse magazine can be yours for a subscription fee of $7.95 which is a special deal right now; the usual subscription rate is $25. Per their 'about' page: "The Old Schoolhouse is a glossy, full-color magazine packed with information and articles that homeschoolers enjoy reading. The Old Schoolhouse started out as an eBay business and is now a global homeschooling company offering homeschoolers a variety of resources and encouragement, as well as ways to learn about the latest and greatest educational resources out there." You can request a free copy of this magazine directly from their website.
Another great resource is The Teaching Home Newsletter. This is a Christian magazine for home educators and what they offer is a free newsletter. Home Education Magazine offers a one-year subscription for $26 a year (you can purchase multi-year subscriptions, as well). Per their FAQ page: "For 26 years we've been delivering good ideas, fun projects, reviews of great resources, thoughtful insights, support from long time homeschoolers, and helpful connections to the world of homeschooling straight to homes across the country. Every issue is full of "help, guidance, validation, and support."
A final recommendation is Homeschooling Today Magazine. With a subscription rate of $21.99 per year, this magazine has something for everyone - whether you are just considering homeschooling or are a veteran. Their web-site offers links to many different resources and is just a wealth of information. For a complete listing of the most popular newsletters and magazines on homeschooling available, you can go to the NCHE website.
Whether you are new to homeschooling or not, you can always benefit from new ideas that can come from these publications. Books are a great resource to have on the basics of homeschooling, but magazines and newsletters that are put out monthly can offer you really up-to-date information not only on what is going on in the world of homeschooling or new ideas on how to teach a certain subject, but also offer some of the latest in new curriculums.

I just subscribed to The Old Schoolhouse magazine. They said I will get my first magazine in Jan. I'm excited. I've heard lots of great things about it! :o)
